A nice B&B in an excellent location, midway between Eastsound and Moran State Park. The building and grounds are lovely, a cedar-shingled, West Coast-style house surrounded by well kept gardens on a quiet, private street. The interior is a disappointment--bland suburban decor, colorless and without much character. Our room was on the second floor and very comfortable, excellent mattress and a spacious bathroom with tub, stall shower, and two sinks. Clean and comfortable but, again, not much charm. Breakfasts were beautifully prepared and delicious. The owners were not there when we stayed, and had left the place in the care of a substitute. She provided great service and was a superb breakfast chef, but wasn't familiar with the island and therefore couldn't give us much information about recreation or restaurants. There's a hot tub but we didn't use it. We enjoyed our stay and would consider returning.

We are glad you enjoyed your stay and, once again after we responded to your email note, we are sorry that you were disappointed about our not being here as we were truly in need of a short break. We took great care to orient our interim innkeeper about Orcas Island and, as you know, we provide a listing of current "things to do" so that our guests are aware of interesting events, venues and dining opportunities. These are also handed to our guests when you check-in as well as contained in our website on our "Travel Tips" page and our menu book lists all restaurants, sample menus and meal times.
Yes, as any potential guest can see from our website's virtual tour and images, our decor is understated, uncluttered and unfettered by frou frou. To some, this may seem without " much charm", but for us our Asian/French simplicity expresses our tastes and our desire to usher our beautiful natural setting inside our comfortable dwelling.

Beautiful, peaceful room with a very comfortable bed and spacious bath with all the accoutrements. We enjoyed listening to the Christopher Peacock CDs in the room. It felt like there was no one else staying in the house until breakfast, when a surprising number of people would materialize, seemingly out of nowhere, for breakfast.
Breakfast sorbets were a first for us, as was breakfast polenta with blueberries... the better-known items like French toast were accompanied by exotic twists like mandarin orange sauce and raspberry chipotle sausage. Hosts Carl and Sue clearly had an established routine, so the elaborate daily breakfast ran like clockwork, and they were relaxed enough to chat with guests during setup and cleanup.

I had no idea what to expect of Orcas Island. My friend suggested it, so I went along. We stayed at Otter's Pond, as she'd been there before. The island is charming - no fast food outlets at all. Just glorious Northwest scenery, with the ocean or a lake at every turn, and several small villages with independent restaurants and boutiques. Having come from a big city on the Prairies, this was amazing.

Otter's Pond is easy to find, just off a main road. It looks rustic and unassuming when you pull into the parking lot, but take a step through the front door and your first view of the pond through far glass doors is one you'll never forget. I kept going to the over again and again to enjoy the scene.

Once a private home, innkeepers Susan and Carl Silvernail have maintained the "welcome home" ambiance. The well-appointed kitchen is the focus of the main floor, with Sue and Carl busy every morning whipping up one fantastic breakfast after another. Pumpkin spice waffles with whipped cream, baked apple pancakes, and pancakes banana foster were the three we were served (we asked for no eggs), with fresh fruit and Sue's homemade sorbets of various flavors. Tea and hot chocolate service is available all day.

The rooms are beautifully appointed, all with great views and private baths. The piece de resistance of course is Otter's Pond itself, a wildlife preserve which forms the back yard. The comings and goings of birds and water fowl is endlessly fascinating - you never know what you'll see.

There's a computer set up for guests' use, or Internet connection for your own, all free. Guests are provided with warm, snuggy robes for lounging in comfort or wearing to the hot tub on the deck. Rain or shine, it's glorious to sit in the hot tub and watch the weather change, as it does from hour to hour on Orcas. Housekeeing is impeccable, not a bit of dust to be found, nor anything out of place. Fresh flowers from the garden add a colorful note when in season.

Sue and Carl know the island intimately and are full of suggestions for sightseeing and walks through the parks and along the scenic paths. They were gracious and welcoming throughout. Otter's Pond is a great place to relax, read, and enjoy the island. It's been difficult readjusting to the real world after three days of pampering.

My wife have stayed at Otter's Pond many times. The rooms are private and comfortable. The breakfast is also quite good. The proprietors are knowledgeable about the area and are helpful in helping guests get the most out of the time on the island.

This was our 7th year staying at the Otter's Pond B&B. We discovered it in Sept. 2002 and have been returning every year. It is such a peaceful and beautiful place. Carl and Sue, the owners, are gracious and helpful. They are knowledgeable about everything on the island. The breakfasts are amazing! They are usually 5 courses or so with fresh local fruits and Carl's famous coffee. We are so full we don't eat lunch! The location makes it easy to get to Eastsound for dinner or Moran Park for a hike.
We look forward to our trip every year. It's like going to our 2nd home.

My husband and I chose Otter's Pond B&B to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary and we spent several days enjoying the comfort, serenity and beauty of this B&B and Orcas Island. The breakfasts at Otter's Pond are absolutely incredible. The innkeepers were very welcoming and went out of their way to make us feel at home. This is the perfect place for adults to get away from a hectic life and relax.

We were only to stay one night - we have 2 babies at home, so this was a rare treat. We chose Otters Pond based on the reviews and the online menu for the breakfast. After all, we love food, and the idea of eating one of their magnificently reviewed breakfasts without having our kids screaming sounded glorious. Let me be clear - the place itself was very nice and clean, but our food was way below expectations and I think I know why. Somehow we ended up staying there on a weekend where the main hosts, the ones everyone raves about in the reviews, were out of town and we got a sub. She was nice and very hospitable, but the breakfast, which looked great on paper, was wayyy below the standards established in the reviews. We had our suspicions when the "homemade" lemonade turned out to be Crystal Lite with lemons floating into it - both of us can taste nutrasweet a mile away and can't stand the stuff. But we were still excited for breakfast; after all, it sounded delicious. It wasn't: the bacon was burnt to a dark, virtually inedible crisp, then there was a type of boiled crumble with mealy, unripe peaches, and a "chili cheese egg puff" made with canned, sliced chiles in a thick, rubbery pile of cooked to death egg and melted cheese. At least I thought we would have fresh baked goods (after reading the reviewers rave), but instead we had scones that were a few days old - stale and dry.
Again, the place was beautiful and meticulous, and our substitute host was very sweet. The only complaint, was the food, which was a big to us because it motivated us to choose the B & B in the first place. Maybe we would have had better luck with the original chefs...

Most innkeepers take infrequent, usually short term breaks sometimes even in peak travel times. Following our committment to superior services and guest accommodations, we have retained the services of an outstanding innsitter and she has been with us during the past ten years. Not one complaint about our wonderful breakfasts. After receiving this complaint we scoured the guestbooks--only positive comments about the quality of our breakfasts and guest services. Then we received a telephone call from a guest who was here at the very same morning as the comlainant and she wanted to contact our innsitter to express her gratitude for the fine services and breakfasts. Alas, we are not perfect, but the compaint seems more based on preferences rather than quality. We believe in continuous improvement and we urge guests to do what we do and that is to provide immediate feedback to the host when expectations are not being met otherwise we are unable to reach our goal that all our guests have the best experience possible.
