“Why didn't I look at Trip Advisor first?”
Reviewed April 12, 2013

We were starved, saw this place advertised, and felt like Mexican, but it was very disappointing. If only we had thought to look at Trip Advisor's site first. Everything written about it was right. The only good marks I could give it were that the summer brew was a good unfiltered beer, they let us taste it first, and the house wine was good and serving generous.

“Good and generally authentic latin american food”
Reviewed April 2, 2013

We ate dinner here on a Friday night because the place we had intended to go was too full (they quoted us an hour wait). Being low-season, the choice of places was limited, so we decided to take a chance on this place, even though (strangely) it was pretty empty. The portions were generous and the prices were o.k. The cook is from the same country in latin america as my wife, so he came out and we chatted.

Overall, the portions were quite reasonable / generous, and we were reasonably satisfied without an appetizer and desert. The exception might be the kids burgers: although perfectly sized for my young children (3 and 6), the sliders they served them would not satisfy older children.

“good food and a lot of fun!”
Reviewed January 30, 2013

We have visited the San Juan Islands many times but never spent a whole week on Orcas Island before this January 2013.

Being the low season, your choice of restaurants is limited, but Agave was ready and waiting. We live in the heart of Texas so Mexican food is our favorite, so we just had to try it.

I decided to try something different from your regular enchilladas, etc., so I chose steamed clams, cooked with cilantro and tomatoes; they came with tasty bread slices to sop up the juice. They were wonderful!! The waitress was very nice and attentive. Happens that her daughter is the chef, and she makes one great guacamole. Every Mexican food restaurant fixes their food differently, and that's okay. This was not "Tex-Mex, but it was good.

After our dinner, we were invited to play Trivia with the locals in the bar. So for $2/person we made a team and came in second place! We had tons of fun for a couple of hours and got me meet some really nice folks.

Yes, the food is a bit pricey, but you are on an island, were everything has to be brought in, either by small plane or ferry, unless it's summer growing season. And yes, we paid extra for chips and hot sauce and didn't mind doing so at all.

I would go back in a heartbeat. We were one of the few (if maybe only) visitor to the island in January and we were made to feel right at home.

“good, bad and expensive”
Reviewed January 7, 2013

margharitas (sp?) were good but expensive ($14 ea), crab enchiladas were very good, but fish tacos were very disappointing. Bill came to $90 plus tip for 2 people. Ouch.

“Taste and atmosphere”
Reviewed December 12, 2012

Great drinks and selection of tequila, very good food. I love the fish tacos, vegetarian options, great staff. This place is worth a visit, they sometimes have live music.
