“Gloomy and depressing...”
Reviewed September 22, 2011

This is a north-facing property at the base of a hill, and in the Northwest that means dark, gloomy, and to my wife and me, depressing. Although the water is clear, the bay serene, and the pebbly beach appealing, the tiny cabin we rented was unacceptable. "Rustic" should not be defined by Salvation Army furniture, dust bunnies dancing in the corners, and a 300 sq. ft. mossy, overgrown cottage divided into odd, tiny cubicles. The "resort" nature of Beach Haven consists of a horshoe pit, a walking trail, and a few row boats for rent at $39.00 per day. It is definitely not a "resort" by conventional standards.
We reserved and paid for five days, stayed three and left. We will not return.

Room Tip: Perhaps the larger units are more acceptable, but do not stay in the four small cabins for two.

We were shocked by this review and felt it was unfortunate that this guest did not express his issues to us during his stay as we rarely have unhappy guests. Beach Haven has been hosting guests since 1939. We have been featured in many guidebooks and tv travel shows that have all been positive reviews. For decades we have received rave reviews and have thousands of guests who return every year to enjoy the tradition of staying in a secluded log cabin on the beach. Our furniture is not Slavation Army as we buy new items annually to keep the cabins up to date. We pride ourselves on great housekeeping and management personally checks housekeeping before each guest arrival. We do not face North as we have the longest sunset on this side of the island - until 11pm during some summer months. The winter can be darker on this side of the island, but many of our off season guests come to enjoy the warmth of their cozy cabin then and spend time reading, writing, cooking and being artistic. We have an exceptional nature trail that winds through old maples, glacial rocks, song bird habitat and mossy knolls. We offer 2 sizes of row boats, kayaks, canoes and stand up paddle boards. The cabins are rustic and the design in the 1930s may not be the same as a modern log cabin but most of our guests agree that the "authentic" cabins are what make Beach Haven so special. We are sorry that this guest did not enjoy their experience but after 14 years of managing this piece of paradise I can accept that some people are better off going to a posh 5 star resort to be waited on instead of enjoying the nature beauty and historical nature of Beach Haven.
