“Our favorite!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2014

The Salish was predictably quirky, eccentric, fascinating, visually-stimulating yet relaxing, and though it was what we expected, it managed to exceed expectations in every aspect. After 13,000 miles of road tripping this summer, in looking back the Salish was hands down our favorite stop. We spent two days with 8 family members in the Salmon Shoals cottage. Super economical to find one place that slept us all, plus being able to cook our own food when we wanted to. Highlights were the floor-to-ceiling antiques and curios, plus amenities including a fully-equipped kitchen, washer and dryer with detergent provided, plus plentiful and wonderful linens for bath and bed, making bedrooms cozy. Kids took over the downstairs that has a bed and sofa bed, plus only an exterior entrance, which meant it was quiet for grownups upstairs. And, because it was windowless downstairs, there was no morning light so kids slept forever. It was so safe, we never thought twice about the 5-year-old running up and down. Hot tub on deck was a hit. Local kayaking, restaurants, shopping was delightful. We haven't stopped talking about it, and will definitely come back!

We had a large group staying at Seal Lodge and it was really pretty good. This "cabin" has three bedrooms and three bathrooms. So it sleeps at least 6, up to 8 if you use the sofa bed. Unfortunately, the dining room table doesn't fit this big of a group, so we always had some people inside and some outside. We all saw this as a negative, since we are a very social group! The "spa" shower in the king sized bedroom didn't work, the towels all smelled somewhat musty. And, I have to say it, as is common with many resort places, there were so many knick-knacks and decorations on all the flat surfaces, it was difficult to find room for our own things! I wish people would be more restrained in decorating vacation spots. No closets really, no shelves in the bathrooms, hardly any place in the kitchen to put our food and not much food prep area either. But, the views were fantastic, we saw lots of wildlife- orcas, otters, seals, not to mention all the birds. The sunsets were super!

We are pleased you enjoyed your stay with us at Seal Point cottage. The dining room table has built-in extensions that pull out, making it into a very large table. But these extensions are so well built into the table that they're easy to miss. We apologize for the "spa" feature of the shower not working, but the "spa" is so high-tech we have had trouble finding someone to repair the bells-and-whistles features after a guest was so intrigued by the whole unit that he did some exploring and blew out the mother-board. We hope you still enjoyed the shower. We had never considered the need for more closets on the lower level. The upper bedroom has a room-length closet, but the lower level has a closet for suitcases but no bar to for hangers. Thank you for helping us improve our guests' experience. The eagles love to coo and call each other on the tree off your deck. It is truly "magical."

From the first greeting by Thane through the entire visit, we felt relaxed and at home. We stayed in the "Orca Watch" unit. Very nautically themed private cottage with a beautiful water view from the dining table and the private hot tub on the deck. We had to look past the two deer one morning to see the water. They welcomed our small beagle. There is a great off leash dog park near by. Fully stocked kitchen. Very clean. We'll come back here.

Room Tip: 8 cottages, all feel very secluded and private. The Orca Watch cottage was awesome.

First I am an East Coast guy so this was my first time to the West Coast yet it was decided by a group of my friends that Orcas Island would be a perfect retreat. We decided on the North Shore Retreat. I was truly touched by an amazing grace. We stated in a wonderful house away from the other homes. Each house have there own whirl pool. We had a full kitchen. Comfortable rooms. We had one slight issue that was quickly fixed. Even better down the road was an amazing outfitter that took us whale watching. I have already told Northshore that I am coming back next year with my wife.

The short story: You won't find a better place, location, and price on Orcas Island. (by the way they recently changed their name to salish seaside escapes and you should check groupon and living social, they frequently have deals). This is one of the few places where you have public access to sunsets, views of Mt. Baker and the coastal mountains of British Columbia, a pretty good beach, and you are close to town. They have several different housing options. I have stayed in the salmon shoal and the seal point. These are the larger homes and they have smaller options as well. I stayed at the Seal Point about 7 years ago (July 2007) and at the time it was a bit old and in need of some updates, but still very nice and comfortable. Certainly clean and nice. It appears they have updated the home a little bit. I remember there being a "bedroom" that isn't really separated by full walls from the living room that was a bit disappointing. More recently we stayed at the Salmon Shoal, which is also nice. It could be updated, but it's very functional. What is nice is that there is a very separate living space under the house essentially in the basement. It's perfect for a family like mine where I have a 2 year old child, so my wife and I could have our own space and could put our son to bed down stairs, but the rest of the house is shared with our travel companions and allowed us to hang out together after putting my son to bed. The house is PACKED with random stuff that is sort of fun (a lot of it bear themed art and nick-nacks). The kitchen was very functional, the grill on the balcony was difficult and of poor quality, and the hot tub was very nice. The kitchen was well stocked with dishes and all the pots/pans/utensils that you'd need. The dish washer and washer/dryer are nice and function well. You definitely get a fully functioning house here. The yard is beautiful with gorgeous flowers and a little bit difficult access to the water with crawling over slippery boulders to the water (at low tide), but once you are there, there are interesting tide pools with star fish, sea anemonies, and other interesting tidal pool life. We took the patio furniture down on the lawn to watch the spectacular sunset each evening. At high tide there is basically no beach and water access as the water comes right up to the house. While I don't know for sure, I think that during the winter (probably October to March) you probably don't get a direct view of the sunset, at the same time, it's not likely the weather will cooperate to show you a sunset anyway. Also because of tide flucuations, you might not get any water access during the transitional parts of the year because of tide related issues (probably around october and march). This is a family owned business and they are very friendly and easy to work with.

The house is on a very much not busy road which is nice for a stroll down to the public beach down the road, and you could walk to town if you wanted. It's about 1.5 miles to town, and fairly flat, so it could make a very nice walk before and after dinner. The new-ish brewery is a similar walk.

I highly suggest you visit the San Juan islands some time in your travels and Orcas Island is my favorite and this is clearly the best place to stay on the Island all things considered.

We stayed in Salmon Shoal. It was incredible inside - a crowded museum of antiques. We were absolutely delighted by the house, the location, the cleanliness, and the friendly owners. The outside, however, was a disappointment. It was sad to see the lovely landscaping between the house and the water being taken over by blackberries and other weeds. And it was beyond irritating to see 2/3 of the spectacular view completely blocked from deck and house. A partial view was all you could see unless you walked down past the Rhodie hedge. Seriously? Rhodies? The most ordinary and mundane plant in Washington, pretty for 2-3 weeks a year? They said they were going to trim it to fence level, but that won't give the view for long. We may return, but never to that unit. Also, the large "extra room" advertised is a windowless basement. It would be great for kids, except it is also stuffed with antiques. It says it sleeps 8-10, but it is a 2 bedroom house, with a converted basement.

Room Tip: The little house that sleeps 2 is magical, and worth the trip.

Thank you for your review. I'm so glad you were able to spend some time on the Salish Sea with us. I'm sorry the view from your cottage wasn't all that you hoped for. But I hope you'll come back again and try another one of our beautiful cottages. Each one is unique with its own story and landscaping. We try to keep our landscapes as close to natural as possible, and we try to keep our cottage foliage significant, so that your experience is one of privacy and seclusion. I hope you were able to take a walk through our grounds. They are always open to all our guests. On your next visit, I hope you will take some time to walk along our landscaped paths through the resort and down by the water, where we have benches to enjoy the view. Or spend some time in our stone gardens, or in Sea Otter Sauna. We love to make our guests comfortable and happy. Please let us know when you'd next like to visit, and we'll choose the right cottage for you! The Sweet Family

We stayed in the seal point house using our living social deal. What a deal! The house was unique and comfertable and had everything including all the basics plus things like laundry soap. Books galore, you dont need anything but food. What we liked most was they were pet friendly. No deposit or restrictions on pets. Unheard of. I figured the house would maybe smell like dog, but no pet odors and really clean. I tell everyone about this place!

Room Tip: King bedroom is best but you have to go through the twin beds room to get to it. Or there is an alte...
