“Two great cruises for the price of one”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 11, 2012

Our party of 5 contacted Outer Island Expeditions to book a sunset whale watching cruise. Before booking, Joe (the captain with whom I was speaking) informed us that we wouldn't see any orcas that evening as they had left the waters a few days before and would not be back in time. Although we were disappointed to hear that since we had all hoped to view the orcas, we appreciated Joe's honesty and decided to book the cruise anyway. We were so glad we did! Joe, who was our captain and naturalist for the cruise, and Damien (who I believe was another captain and naturalist) were a great team. They were friendly, funny, and quite informative. Although they tried their best to seek out whales, none were sighted. However, we thoroughly enjoyed cruising around the San Juan and Gulf (Canada) Islands, viewing Mt. Baker in the evening light, seeing many seals and bald eagles, getting wonderful views of the Patos Island lighthouse at sunset, and watching the full moon rise over the San Juans. The trip was quite magical, with so many lovely shades of blue and pink in the evening light. True to the company's word and their guarantee, we all received vouchers for a free cruise since we hadn't seen any whales. I called the following day to check on whale sightings as that would be our last day on the island. Beau (the owner) informed me that a humpback whale had been spotted and he was very accommodating, stating he would reserve spaces for us and not sell them to other customers. We took another sunset cruise that evening, again with Joe, and were not disappointed. The new, fast boats that this company uses enabled us to reach the humpback whale quickly and have more time to spend viewing the magnificent creature swimming around, spouting, and showing his tale. Joe was quite passionate about his desire to educate the public about whales in order to better protect them. In addition to the whale, we also saw eagles, a sea lion posing on a giant rock at sunset, lots of seals - including a new-born pup, along with a spectacular sunset, moonrise, and views of Mt. Baker. Both cruises were wonderful and we were very pleased with the integrity of the company and their willingness to accommodate us.

“Crabbing, Whale Watching, Fishing Combo”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2012

Party of eight charter for the trio of activities mentioned in the title. Bo was very professional in booking this trip for us, working with us on price and plans and following up to reconfirm before the trip. Paul, our Captain (who I think was a subcontractor) was friendly, knowledgeable and a great guide for our 6 hours on the water. Had a great day and would use them again. The only reason I held back a star was there was early confusion about whether to go North or South to see the whales and by the time the decision was made and we got there and back, more than half the trip was over.

“Excellent private charter experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2012

We hired a private charter for 7 people, including two toddlers ages 2 & 4. The boats are brand new, comfortable, well-maintained, and well-suited for the the conditions in the San Juans. Captain Paul was knowledgeable, friendly, professional, and kind. He even brought along chocolate donuts, granola bars, and bottled water!! We saw a humpback whale, harbor porpoises, seals, eagles, exotic wild game, and a giant pacific sea star. In addition to our 3 hour tour, we also added crabbing to our expedition, which was well worth it. We caught 7 Dungeness. An amazing experience, affordable, and well worth it.

“Whales are far away dots”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 4, 2012

Yes, we saw orcas, but the boats can't harass them, so we saw them at quite a distance, so bring good binoculars. However, if that's OK, then this excursion was good: we were in a new and comfortable boat, the crew were knowledgeable and helpful, and we also saw seals, porpoise, and bald eagles.

“94% chance of seeing wildlife, and they give you another free tour if you dont see whales!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 2, 2012 via mobile

We had a blast, Joe was a great tour guide with tons of knowledge and expertise! The boats are brand new and Joe drives great. Make sure to sit up top because Joe likes to talk to the people on top. Also there's much more than whales
