“Hearty, Delicious, Warm, and Generous”
Reviewed March 3, 2014 via mobile

We stayed at the Marina Inn in Des Moines the night before an early flight out of SeaTac. Once we had checked into the hotel, we walked next door to Lago Azul for supper.

The decor in the restaurant is funky old school, a bit worn, but spotlessly clean. It felt warm and unpretentious. The staff welcomed us warmly and helped us with our menu selections. The menu is extensive, with everything you would expect to find at a Mexican restaurant, plus a few specialties of the house that were new to us. While we waited for our meals, we enjoyed warm tortilla chips with salsa.

My parents ordered combination platters. The chilies rellenos, chimichangas and tamales were delicious. The cook had a nice touch with the retried beans. I tried a delicious stew with beef steak, chicken, mushrooms and peppers in a mildly spicy tomato sauce. It came with picco de gallo, rice, beans and avocado wedges. It was delicious! The portions were very generous. We felt sad leaving food behind, but we couldn't finish, and were flying out the next morning.

This place is a gem. I don't know when we will be in Des Moines again, but I will definitely make a return visit.

“Better than "Average"”
Reviewed February 2, 2014

Solid, no frills choice for a hearty, although not fancy, Mexican meal. The decor is somewhat dated, the dining room clean, the staff friendly and attentive. The menu is extensive and includes vegetarian and "Kid" options. Some side dishes were unimaginative but the main courses were very tasty. Overall good value for your dollar. Not necessarily a restaurant I would chose for a special occasion, but one I will return to when I crave Mexican.

“Great food - good portions”
Reviewed January 7, 2014

This is a nice, family run restaurant that is attached to the Marina Inn. There is a nice little bar with TVs for sports; great Margaritas, wonderful, well made food.

“Family Owned”
Reviewed November 21, 2013

Family owned mexican restaurant in Des Moines. Overall good food, they make most everything homemade. Service is hit and miss. Lunch time is good since they have great lunch specials and they are really good sized portions. I never leave there without a to go bag. If you have a margarita don't go with the house, anti-up the $$ and get the large cadilac with the extra money for a good margarita. House margarita is not good.
