We stayed at the Marina Inn in Des Moines the night before an early flight out of SeaTac. Once we had checked into the hotel, we walked next door to Lago Azul for supper.
The decor in the restaurant is funky old school, a bit worn, but spotlessly clean. It felt warm and unpretentious. The staff welcomed us warmly and helped us with our menu selections. The menu is extensive, with everything you would expect to find at a Mexican restaurant, plus a few specialties of the house that were new to us. While we waited for our meals, we enjoyed warm tortilla chips with salsa.
My parents ordered combination platters. The chilies rellenos, chimichangas and tamales were delicious. The cook had a nice touch with the retried beans. I tried a delicious stew with beef steak, chicken, mushrooms and peppers in a mildly spicy tomato sauce. It came with picco de gallo, rice, beans and avocado wedges. It was delicious! The portions were very generous. We felt sad leaving food behind, but we couldn't finish, and were flying out the next morning.
This place is a gem. I don't know when we will be in Des Moines again, but I will definitely make a return visit.
