We just had a wonderful stay at Iron Springs Resort last weekend. The cabins were absolutely beautiful, very clean, cozy and the staff had anticipated every possible need. The office even had items we forgot to bring with us. Great Job and we will be back!

Iron Springs has remodeled or rebuilt their cabins, but upgraded the interiors to a level of luxury that I think is unmatched on the Washington Coast. The beds are heavenly, the full kitchens have all needed appliances, top notch ranges and ovens, and great cookware and serving ware. There is not a restaurant on site, but there are several small grocery stores in the area. My suggestion is to pack a cooler with larger and costly items, since the local stores are a little spendy. You will also be sure to have what you need for recipes, since the local choices are skimpy. We did find some great fresh produce at a stand in Copalis Crossing, about eight miles away.

Its not that far to drive to good restaurants in Ocean Shores, but to me that takes some of the fun and romance away from having a cabin retreat in the woods.

The cabins all have great views from windows and most have large decks with grills for a BBQ. The are perched on the cliffs above the wide beach and a small creek with its cove. Newer resorts cannot build this close to the water, so they used the existing building sites to rebuild cabins in the same locations as the old ones. The interiors are spectacular, with one-of-a-kind fabrics on comfortable chairs covered in fabrics salvaged from old Hudson Bay and Pendleton trading blankets. They recycled what they could, such as using the old exterior wood inside and building side tables out of the old wood.

Few casual visitors know about or see this isolated part of Washington's coast with its wide, wide beaches, heavily forested lands and intriguing coves. That makes this spot ideal for those who want a family or romantic getaway far from crowds of tourists.

Iron Springs is located on the part of the coast that had some development in the 1950's and 1960's, but the area slowly faded away for several reasons. The main Highway 101 bypasses this area, and the road along the beach dead ends a few miles north, unlike the long scenic beach drive one gets along Oregon's coast.

The only time this beach is not isolated is during one of the few times a year when clamming is allowed here. Then it is jam-packed. The resort thoughtfully provides a clam-cleaning station on its lowest level near the beach, and this would be the place I would want to stay, if I could for, razor clams.

I can't wait to go back this winter and watch the storms from a cozy cabin with a wood-burning fireplace and the most comfortable beds of any place I have ever stayed. And, yes, I will be able to do some work since it has wi-fi and cell phone repeaters.

Oh, and bring a big flashlight, since the trail to the beach is very dark at night, and you won't want to miss a night time beach walk, especially on a clear night with absolutely no washout of the sky from civilization.

Room Tip: Be very specific about your needs when you reserve since every cabin is unique. Some cabins have an open concept, and some have bedrooms. Some cabins connect and can be opened to meet the needs of a large family. There is one cabin with a roll-in shower. A few have bath tubs, which parents of young children prefer over showers-only. Every cabin is dog-friendly. Ask about needed technology if it is a must-have because we heard only a few cell providers work well here and at least one cabin does not have tv, wi-fi or cell.

Iron Springs has been a family tradition since our now twenty-something children were toddelers. Many wonderful memories. Now that owners have changed, and remodel is done, we looked forward to this August stay with our grandchild and adult children. Imagine our disappointment when we were told our room with cleaning deposit would average around $300. a night! The place did need work, and had slowly declined in the twenty five years we visited. But paying twice as much per night will price it out of many families reach. So sad.:( We will be looking for a new place I guess.

First time there. Don't know what it was like before, but the renovation was well done, very thoughtful. Nice details like dog bowls outside the cabins, towels for the dogs. Kitchen stocked with all the right utensils for anything you might want to cook. Free firewood. Most importantly, a very comfortable bed! My favorite thing, aside from the fantastic view: the puzzle! Like I said, very thoughtful and very welcoming.

Iron Springs finally starting taking reservations again this spring and we booked our annual summer weekend at the beach for July. I had stayed at Iron Springs at least once a year since the 1980s until it just became run down and a shadow of itself. That is in the past. After a year long renovation, the resort is open again and better than ever. The new owners thought of everything from fully equipped kitchens with granite counters, to big comfy beds, wonderful fixtures, grills on the decks, flat screen tvs down to a dog cleaning (and clam cleaning) station and dog towels in every cabin. Yes, the dog towels are distinquished by the paw print on them. The views are as wonderful as ever and the beach right there. The pictures on the web site don't begin to do it justice. I am just thrilled to have my favorite place on the beach back. We are already planning our next trip for this fall.
