If you like trying about every micro brew in Washington and enjoy a talking to the locals then this is the place for you. The owners are great people and they love to take a minute and talk about beer or diving. Awesome place

“Awesome Pub Atmosphere”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 5, 2013

The best thing about this pub is the décor. It's a very well done vintage deep sea diving theme. The pub has a comfortable, welcoming feel. It is large, with a variety of seating choices: tables, booths, outdoor, even a pair of Adirondack chairs by a fire pit. There is a pool table and darts. The pub has a large selection of unusual beers on tap. On the early Saturday evening that we visited, there were just a handful of customers. Even though service was homey and friendly, it was a bit distracted and inattentive. The menu is interesting and different. It seemed to lack the typical pub fare (burgers, chicken strips, fries). The food was o.k., nothing outstanding. Still, for grabbing a beer with friends, this place is awesome.

“Great pub, unexpectedly good food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 26, 2013

This pub was a nice surprise. Set in the middle of a dying little logging town (I'm sorry, Chehalis, but it's true), the Devilfish Public House is a bit of an oddity.

"Devilfish' was an old fashioned name for octupus. While Puget Sound is home to the largest octupusses in the world, Chehalis is a bit of a drive from the Sound. The only octopusses in Chehalis are in the pictures on the wall of this pub. The walls are lined with movie posters, most of them having something to do with the octopus. The style is maritime, with antique brass ship fittings and diving helmets.

The Devilfish purports to be an Irish pub. But other than the flags of Ireland and Scotland, there didn't seem much Irish to it.

There was lots of room for Friday after 5 crowd. Music was low, low enough that one could carry on a conversation. The customers were an equally mixed lot: a pair of tree hugging biologists (us), bikers, a pair of loggers, farmers, two young 'kids' in love and hopefully, legal drinking age.

The microbrews were varied but, inexplicably, many of the drafts were tapped out.

Again, there wasn't much in the way of """Irish""" food on the menu. Bangers and mash and shepherd's pie are both English or Scot, I'm not sure which. Nevertheless, the menu was quite eclectic. I had the chicken wrap, my husband had the Jambalaya. Both were VERY good. My wrap's tortilla was perfectly baked--just crisp enough to have a toothiness, and yet soft so that I didn't break a tooth on it.
The chicken was flavorful and plentiful. The bacon was real bacon, not the artificial junk you find so often, and had obviously just been cooked. My husband's jambalaya was also perfect. The shrimp were fresh (although he was non-plussed to find they hadn't removed the tails...but a lot of restaurants don't.). The rice had just the right 'bite' to it. Thank all the gods the cook resists putting the horrid, inappropriate and ubiquitous green bell peppers into it. Thank you, sir or ma'am. No, the bite was provided by just the right amount of jalapeno and red pepper. The sausage balanced perfectly with the entire dish.

Prices were just about right.

In an area where comfort food rules: steak, hamburgers, pizza, the Devilfish bucks the trend and sets out on its own course, and does it right. We'll go back.

By the way, no. Octupus was NOT on the menu.

“Enjoyed every bite”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 13, 2013 via mobile

Stopped in for lunch. I had the Ruben and my husband had the Jambalaya. We shared and both were excellent. Great selection of mico brews. Atmosphere was fun and price was reasonable. Can't to go back and try the bangers and mash.

“Not If You Are In A Hurry”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 1, 2013

Would love to provide a review of their food but I cannot since my order was never placed. I ended up leaving and going somewhere else. Beer selection was good as was the ambiance. However I recommend ordering two beers at a time because the wait was so long to get service. The owner was handling all drink and food service by himself and would spend an extremeley long time with his regulars and pay no attention to any other customers. Hence he did not notice my lack of food for 1/2 hour and than offered excuses about the cook not showing up. Glad I did not end up eating eat a meal prepared by the busboy. Won't be back.
