Good view, nice little gift shop, and good break from the long drive. Make sure you travel on a clear day. Clouds will definitely affect your views...

We pulled up to the Forest Learning Center and found that they are only open Friday through Mondays, even in the summer. They did, however, have their gift shop and bathrooms open. We walked on their short trail system behind the building. It was rather steep, but the promise of a "viewpoint" spurred us on. When we got to the end of the trial, you couldn't see anything at all because of the trees. There was absolutely no view. Don't fall for that unless you just want to hike up and down a steep hill!

This is not a park sanctioned facility, but it is dressed up to look like a national park visitor's center on the way to the real visitor center. Instead, it is a shill for the logging industry. Do not waste your time.

We didn't go inside but the views of the Toutle valley were just amazing. Take the time and walk around the different view points. Building looked modern, recent likely had good stuff.

Suggest stopping at the Forest Learning Center- before Mt. St. Helens National Park Site- where there is a nice visitor center, nice restrooms, and picnic benches, great gift shop and some helpful volunteers. Nice discovery center Oh, there is a play ground too for the little ones to get some energy out. Fewer crowds than observatory and free. Better views of vegetation and elk than Mt. St Helens. Both offer something different and the Forest Learning Center is a nice rest along the way. I suggest doing both the Forest Learning Center and the Johnson Observatory. Both offer something different. I think Forest learning Center is more family and kid friendly.
