“Go the full Monty”

Could there be a more sincere host than this lovely Welshman?   Pete was fabulous, within minutes of meeting this charming gentleman you'll want to invite him to YOUR house and feed him breakfast.

The property is quite nice, well landscaped and as good as can be done in their location.  Pete and his wife have artisans eyes for design and composition with their newest cabins being top to bottom completely their own creation and serve as testimony to my claims of their good taste.

They are wholly accommodating and I wish them all the success in the world.

Their proximity to great hikes and stunning views cannot be denied and yet their actual physical location is a touch unfortunate.  A rather busy road is adjacent and the cabin feel is occasionally shattered by a truck trundling by.  The local small grocery store is across the street, if solitude is your mission one must take to wearing blinders of sorts to this.  It is not impossible to achieve the illusion of seclusion while there it would simply be disingenuous to not mention this subtle flaw.   Their older cabins are well decorated and warm but at $300 a night they are a bit pricey.   The newer cabins are well in excess of twice as nice as the older renditions but at $400 a night they too are a little pricey if you're just looking for a place to sleep.   I think the healthiest view of it is to realize this is not just a place to sleep but is an experience as part of your vacation.   It is fair to remark as explanation that these are
not simply rooms in a manor house but truly stand alone unique cabins.  My only similar experience is Callistoga Ranch in Napa at 3-4 times these prices.  They are probably not too pricey for what you actually can get by sitting back and enjoying the location and the charming hosts, one must decide however how much time one plans to spend here rather than in the amazing adjacent natural beauty.

Overall I would say it's worth a go,
knowing what to expect though will do you wonders.

We stayed in Cabin 10, which was new and very very nice... to wake up to those mountain views in the morning - wow! and the breakfasts - creme brule french toast, baked crustless quiche, always fresh fruit and OJ, really really good... delivered hot to your cabin each morning. They arranged for a private hike for us with Martin, who we loved, and he also took us on a wine tour the following day. There is so much to do in this part of the country and I'm so happy that our friend's wedding brought us out this way.
We stayed closer to where the wedding was the last 2 nights and it felt like a dump compared to Carson Ridge Cabins. I cant imagine that there is a nicer place to stay than Carson Ridge in the Columbia Gorge area. So if you will be spending time in Oregon/Washington Border, this is the place for you!

Thank you for sharing this magical place. Truly a gem! We loved the privacy of our own cabin - even our own porch swing! Jennifer was a delight at breakfast and informed us of a great place to drive for the BEST view ever! Loved having morning coffee in the beautifully landscaped area surrounding the cabins - favorite spot was a place with 2 hammocks swinging under 3 huge trees! They truly want to do everything possible to make sure your stay is relaxing - thank you to Pete for his attention to details.

Just spent 3 nights at Carson Ridge Luxury Cabins, but would not likely return. Caveat to this review is that the innkeepers were on vacation while we were there.

Positives: We stayed in Cabin #10, the furthest from the road and the view of the ridge from our porch was beautiful. The cabin was large and roomy. Bed was comfortable. Shower was large and water pressure good. Breakfast was delivered to our room in a timely manner. The assistant Jennifer was friendly and on our last day provided us with a map to easily identify how to drive to the Lewis Creek trail and Mt St Helens with a return to Portland via I5. Several good hikes are accessed off Wind River Road (the hikes are not close to the cabins, but you'd have to drive to Wind River Road if you were staying someplace else) and we took advantage of our location on Wind River Road to access the Gifford Pinchot area for hiking.

Negatives: Per other reviewers, we also believed the location was more off the main road as the welcome letter states you cannot reach the cabins via GPS (our GPS worked fine). It is indeed located on the main road and, in spite of the fence and trees, we found the road noise to be significant, especially during the day, the early evening and the early morning (starting about 5 am for us). The noise is likely better if your windows are closed, but ours were open due to the warm weather. There is a restaurant under construction next door and the noise of saws, power tools, etc was notable during the day.

We were initially scheduled to stay in one of the smaller cabins, but they are quite dark inside and the view is of the garden (some flowering plants, but mostly native grasses and areas of mowed lawn with cushioned chairs). The side windows of the smaller cabins look out on your neighbor's cabin so one would need to close the curtains for privacy. At this time of year, it is nice to have the windows and curtains open to catch the breeze and cool the cabin down at night. We chose to spend more money (avg of $50 more per night, which was a discount from the regular price) to stay in the larger cabin for the privacy, larger and lighter space, and view of the mountains.

In the cabin itself, there is no place to put your clothes other than 2 relatively small (~10 by 15") cloth-lined baskets in the bathroom area. There is a place to hang clothes with hangers available, but it is also where we hung our bath towels as there were no other rods for hanging damp towels to dry. The pillows on the bed (several provided) were all firm and I had expected there to be down or soft down alternative pillows available as well (this is our experience consistently at hotels/other B & B’s). The jacuzzi tub was just odd to us. The jets are either all on (coming from the sides and the bottom of the tub) or all off. The size of the tub was odd and did not comfortably accommodate the two of us (we are avg to small size) and was awkward to climb in and out of. We used it once and would not use again. We would have preferred a traditional outdoor hot tube minus the jets and colored light and remote control. The in-room refrigerator had a noticeable motor noise, which cycles on and off and was too loud for my preference at night when trying to sleep.

The wi-fi access is not available in the cabins. You must be inside the breakfast room or just outside, where the road noise is significant. The breakfast room/check-in room is quite dark and not a particularly pleasant place to hang out. A couple of skylights might help to lighten the feel of the room. It may feel cozy in winter, but it just felt heavy and dark in the summer.
The cream for the coffee (available 24/7, but only brewed once in the morning) was left at room temperature all day and night in the breakfast room and changed the next morning when fresh coffee was brewed for breakfast. I observed this 2 mornings in a row when coming for coffee and almost using the cream left out from the day before. We were disappointed that we did not have fresh brewed coffee brought with our breakfast (which has been our experience at several other inns). Our option was to make the coffee in our room (was hoping for something better than packaged coffee grounds) and no fresh cream was available in the room (only coffee mate options). So we walked down to the breakfast room from our cabin each morning to get coffee there with real cream, making sure we weren't using the half and half left out from the day before.

Breakfast was a mixed bag. The first morning we had quiche (which was quite average), a muffin top (tasty, but we wanted the rest of the muffin), 2 small yogurts, and 1 whole apple (with store sticker still attached) and one whole peach. With the abundance of fresh fruit available locally this time of year, it was very disappointing to not have the fresh fruit/berries for which the area is so well known. The fruit felt like it had been bought at the store and perhaps not washed as the stickers were still attached. The second morning we had huge breakfast burritos and a peach cobbler, both good. Also, whole apple and yogurts again. We took the leftovers on our hike that day. The third morning was the same quiche as the first day, which we did not eat. Ate the blueberry french toast that also came and skipped the whole apple and whole banana, as well as the yogurts again. Overall, the food was ok, but nowhere near the quality, creativity or variety of other inns at which we have stayed. The pictures of breakfast on the website look great, but did not reflect the breakfast provided to us during our stay.

We came to hike the Columbia Gorge and the cabin's binder referenced "The Curious Gorge" book, which the binder states is available in the room. We could not find it in the cabin or the breakfast room with the other books, and Jennifer (the assistant) told us it was now only available for purchase as the copies in the cabins kept disappearing. She offered to lend us a copy, which we ultimately purchased. A terrific reference for hikes!

Jennifer was not a great resource for hikes and I assume Pete would have been more helpful in that regard. The cabin binder does have several suggestions, which we accessed using the "Curious Gorge" book.

Although it is clear that the innkeepers take great pride in their property and service, our experience of the location, food and amenities is not worth the price of admission.

Your experience must have been as upsetting and disappointing for you as reading this review was for us! Bottom Line: We failed to provide you with the getaway you anticipated.

It is very unfortunate we were not here to see to your needs personally. Upon reading your review we have held a staff meeting to address how our absence was dealt with. We do thank you for your comments so we can continue to better our service.

It is alarming for us to find out that you thought the breakfast, especially the fruit, was so substandard. We are confused though, as our other guests staying on the same weekend left comments on how they loved the breakfasts. We use local fruit suppliers whenever possible, however this season the fruit is ripening a lot later than usual.

Our menus are carefully planned and we try to ensure that our guests do not get the same breakfasts during their stay here. We are sorry you had to eat quiche twice; however we are glad that you enjoyed the burritos and peach cobbler.

It is unfortunate we did not anticipate that you required Internet in your cabin, as we do have five of the cabins with Internet. We have kept the other 5 cabins without Internet because the cabins are designed to be a sanctuary to escape from everyday pressures and return back to “life” feeling refreshed.

We are glad you got to enjoy one of the new, larger cabins and the views that come along with it. A lot of our guests like the smaller cabins because of the coziness, privacy and romantic ambiance they provide.
We are sorry you had to hear the construction noise of the restaurant next door instead of getting to enjoy their wonderful food. It is now finished and we are very excited to have a restaurant right across the garden for our guests to enjoy.

We are also sorry that you had to hear traffic noise from your cabin. Usually you cannot hear any traffic from cabin 10 at all as it is 500 feet from the road. Yes, we are located in a town along side of Wind River Rd. Carson is a very small unincorporated town; the town center consisting mainly of general store, hardware store, a couple of restaurants, garden center & a post office. However, it is this location right in the center of the Gorge that affords our guests access to all the wonderful things of the Gorge and in particular the Gifford Pinchot National forest. To be in a place with no traffic noise whatsoever would be very remote and far away from all these activities & attractions which our guests so love. In light of your comments though, we are looking into getting the traffic speed in front of the property decreased and enforced.

We are not quite sure how to address some of your concerns such as lack of clothes storage, poor Jacuzzi tub, and pillows. Everything in the cabins has been very thoroughly thought through during the creation process. The new cabins have a 7-foot closet with a 7-foot bench as a place for your suitcase, along 3 shelves to place your clothes. We have even included lined baskets for your more personal items. If that does not give enough room there is also a luggage rack to place a suitcase on. We are not sure why you had to use the closet rail to dry the towels, as there is a towel rail right beside the closet and hand crafted wooden hooks. Regarding the hydrotherapy soaking tub, it is a large corner tub designed with 2 contoured seats so 2 people can sit side by side instead of facing each other. The purpose of this is to provide much more comfort while at the same time both people get to face the fireplace, the TV and most importantly the view. The remote is for the purpose of turning off the jets, bubblers and lights if you are looking for a more traditional type of soak.

Each cabin has 6 pillows to choose from ranging from soft to hard. We are not sure how you did not find the soft pillow, however, had we known we could have ensured that you had just the pillow that you required.

Our policy is to exceed our guest’s expectations. In this situation we clearly have not done that. We realize that we may never get a chance to make this right with you personally, but please know that each and every guest, one at a time, is important to us.

Perhaps you will return and give us another chance to personally see to your concerns ourselves to make your vacation everything you hoped it would be. If not, your comments will certainly help us better our service for our return and future guests. For that we say thank you.

This was my second stay at Carson Ridge Luxury Cabins and I was just thrilled. There have been some upgrades since last year and it is looking better than ever. The new paint job makes it look quite sharp, when you drive up the driveway you can now see a beautiful pond and water feature, the gardens are lovelier than ever, but best of all Latisha and Pete really made me feel welcomed. The referral to the wood fired pizza restaurant was great and the scenery and hiking was as spectacular as I remembered.

TI found Carson Ridge to be a haven of peace and relaxation - the best way I can imagine to start my vacation.

Room Tip: The new cabins are fabulous with great views and breakfast delivered to your room!

We could not wait to arrive at Carson Ridge from the description and photos on their web-site. But when we arrived, it was right off the main road, I was so disappointed. Believe me, that didn’t last long! The pictures do not begin to match this estate with total privacy from the road and no noise. Incredible landscaping and nature’s own beautiful views in every direction and top it off with attention to every detail to meet one’s needs.
We stayed in the Salmon Berry Cabin (when we were not enjoying the hillside pathways and hammocks!) The deliciously comfortable bed and pillows put us to sleep after a wonderful soak in the jetted tub.
The creative features inside the cabins and outside in the landscaping made this the most pleasurable stay for all our senses. We didn’t want to leave to go do anything else. We stayed only two nights. I could have stayed a week. We will be back.

We definitely would recommend Carson Ridge Luxury Cabins and had time permitted we would have stayed longer.
We were not quite sure what to expect regarding the proximity to town and the location of the cabins - we couldn't have been more pleased. We stayed in Mt Adams.
My husband and I enjoyed a relaxing visit on our porch overlooking the wedding lawn while in the distance we had a beautiful expansive view of a meadow and the mountains.
The interior of the cabin was wonderful! The owners have their guests in mind. Great robes available to slip into after a soak in the jacuzzi tub ( faced with rock - looks great!) or the double headed stone shower that was large enough it didn't need a door. It was great. Loved the pump shampoo, condtioner and shower gel in the shower.
We loved the bed and the bedding was wonderful. Very comfortable. We had a wonderful nights sleep and woke to the same great view we enjoyed while visiting on the porch.
Enjoyed having breakfast delivered. A tasty egg dish and blueberry cobbler prepared by Jennifer.
So glad we took the chance and gave it a go! Will definitely return when we're back in that area.
P/S Even the little flashlight came in handy.
