“Amazing peacefulness at these cabins”
Reviewed June 18, 2011

We loved our stay at Carson Ridge cabins. We had a family stay and rented 3 cabins for 2 nights. Each couple in the family felt so welcomed by Pete and Latisha (and Jennifer). Loved the front porches and the cozy fireplaces. Nature all around. A grocery store close by if you need it. Easy to find but feels a world apart. Pretty landscaping. Great breakfast included. Can't say enough!

We stayed at the Carson Ridge Luxury Cabins for several nights & didn't want to leave. Even though it was typical Washington/Oregon rainy season it was still beautiful. The fireplace was cozy, the bed comfortable, the service was great, the food was delicious, & the peace & quiet- priceless! Thank you Pete for a wonderful experience for our anniversary!

My husband and I were traveling through Washington and Oregon and stumbled across this rare find. From the moment we called to make the reservation we were treated like family. We certainly couldn't have felt more welcome. When we arrived we were offered our choice of two room that were vacant. We ended up choosing the room with the swinging bed. Very interesting and unique. There was a huge and wonderful jetted tub in the bathroom complete with bath salts and a huge rock shower. The room came with a little fridge and microwave and a great sat TV with all the nice channels. We got a special of buy one get one free massages and they came right to the room . I was a little apprehensive about doing this because I like the whole spa atmosphere; but the people who they had come in and do the massages where so great. We have lots of massages and this was right up there with the best. The greatest part of staying here is that they bring you a lovely basket of hot food for breakfast. This was so great. It was like a picnic; and wow was the breakfast good. And to top if all of the owner's of Carson Ridge are the best! They helped us find some hikes to drive to and attended to our every need. Couldn't have been more welcoming or better place to stay. Would for sure go back in a heartbeat.

I have a lot of fantastic things to say, and a few small criticisms. First, the cabins are wonderful -- just as cozy and beautiful as pictured. It would be impossible NOT to have a romantic weekend while staying here. And even though the cabins are located close to each other, we never heard any of the other guests. The fireplace is gas, so it's quick and easy to turn on and off. The jetted tub is relaxing. The beds are really comfortable -- they provide lots of pillows and blankets and comforters to add to the cozy feel. The cabin area is so quiet (we live in downtown Portland, so the absence of garbage trucks, ambulances, and jackhammers alone was a nice retreat). The host, Pete, was very warm and gracious with all of our requests. There were a lot of details that were taken care of, including providing candles, bath salts, a candle lighter, a wine opener, wine glasses, etc. Overall, Carson Cabins are cute and quaint. This is a great place to stay if you're planning on spending a lot of time in the cabin and really want to connect with your partner.

However, I was surprised by the location. On the website, it seems like it's located in a remote area, maybe at the end of a dead-end dirt road, or up in the hills... it's actually located along the main road in Carson. The main office is literally 10 feet from the road. Granted, you can't hear any traffic when you're in the cabin, but it's definitely not located in a secluded, wooded, private area. And I'm sure the grounds are beautiful...in the summer. In mid-March, the grounds were a little bare, but that's nothing that can be controlled, just something to consider if you're into lush, landscaped, flowering grounds. :)

If you're planning on doing a lot of activities in the Gorge, on the Oregon side, be aware that it's about a 10-15 minute drive just to cross the river... not to mention the $1 toll each way on the Bridge of the Gods (bring $1s -- if you use your debit/credit card, they charge $2).

One last note to anyone with dietary restrictions... the website says it's a buffet style breakfast. My boyfriend is vegan and I'm vegetarian... we didn't mention our dietary restrictions because we just figured we would be able to find something on the buffet line (like pancakes, toast, bagels, eggs, etc) we could eat. But it wasn't a buffet, aside from the toast and yogurt that was available. There were 2 main entrees served at each breakfast, both of which were amazing and gourmet (blueberry creme brulee french toast, peach cobbler, quiche, and a farmers casserole with sausage). Again, the entrees were very tasty, but it is definitely not a "buffet" in the traditional sense. Pete was gracious enough to bring some granola and make some eggs for us, but for anyone visiting Carson Ridge with dietary restrictions (gluten free, vegan, vegetarian, etc.) -- tell them ahead of time so they can make a separate entree for you!!

Tip: We had dinner at the Skamania Lodge, in the River Rock Restaurant (a more casual and less expensive restaurant than their fine dining restaurant). The food was great, relaxing atmosphere, and fantastic views!!

First of all, thank you so much for the wonderful compliments!

A word on the location. As our website describes and our map indicates, we are located in the town of Carson. One side of the property is on the street, while the other 3 sides of the property are surrounded in meadows and forest. Carson is a very small, unincorporated town, and the speed limit in front of our property is only 35 mph. There is a post office across the street which generates some traffic noise, but it is minimal, as well we have a 6' tall cedar fence that runs the length of the property and provides a barrier to most of the street noise. In addition, all the cabins are built so the front doors face away from the street and overlook the landscaped gardens and meadows or towards the Columbia River Gorge.

The reviewer is correct, the grounds are beautiful and lush in the summer. However in the Pacific Northwest, nothing can be expected to be lush and flowering in the winter months. That is why we have created cozy cabins with fireplaces and jetted tubs to cozy up in, away from the cold winter days.

The toll bridge does charge $1 to cross to the Oregon side, however there is so much beauty to see in the Gifford Pinchot National forest and on the Washington side, with out the crowds, that we rarely send our guests to the Oregon side.

If you are a future guest coming here and have dietary requirements PLEASE let us know so we can be sure to have special meals prepared just for you. We handle all kinds of dietary requirements every day, we just have to know about them so we can prepare them.

We take guest feedback very seriously, but more seriously is the attention we give you while you're here. If you find that you aren't satisfied with something we've provided (or failed to provide), please let us know immediately so we can make changes while you're here to enjoy them.

We stayed in one of the cabins as a romantic getaway over Valentine's Day. The things I did like:
The Cabins are in a beautiful area. They are private and charming. The staff is very approachable and willing to really work with your requests. The cabins were clean. The bed and linens were amazingly comfortable. Great proximity to the Columbia River Gorge and wine tasting areas for a day trip. We had in room massages and they were wonderful and right on time. They brought breakfast to our cabin in the mornings per our request with no additional charge.
What I didn't like: My boyfriend had arranged to suprise me by having roses and champagne on ice when we arrived. It would have been perfect except for the host takes you to your cabin and walks through everything with you, it kind of blew the "moment", I wish they would just let us enter on our own, we really didn't need all that instruction, it was overkill. Also, they didn't put the champagne on ice but in the fridge, again, taking some momentum out of the romantic surprise. They provide "Dead Sea Salts" for use in the whirlpool tub but the previous guests had used it and they didn't bother to replace it before our arrival. I only drink decaf and I used the decaf packet the first morning. Even though the empty package was laying on the counter, they didn't bother to put a fresh one there. We had to rummange through the kitchen at night trying to find a packet of decaf. The ice machine was broken but they didn't supply additional ice, it was Valentine's weekend and we weren't the only guests trying to find some ice to chill champagne at night. It is in a pretty remote area and we wanted some takeout our first night there. They have a menu guide in the commons area but don't mention where the restaurants are and there is no map of the area supplied. Some of the menus in the "guide" were over 20 miles away on curvy roads! We were kind of on our own to figure this out. They mention that they have an extensive DVD collection for checkout, but it is anything but extensive, I have more of my own. There were lots of horror movies, hardly anything romantic which doesn't make a whole lot of sense considering this is supposed to be a very romantic resort. According to the website, it looks like the breakfast is HUGE. There were two main dishes they brought us, granted both delicious, but the only other thing was just fresh fruit and Yoplait yogurt. I didn't see any of the gourmet breads pastries and muffins or other stuff mentioned. We had our breakfast brought to the room so I am not sure if we just missed out on that in the main dining room. I have had way better breakfasts elsewhere.

All in all, we had a great time, but there were so many little details that could have been attended to , to make our stay extraordinary. I do recommend this place, but they really need to step up the attention to detail before they are a true top notch destination.

We take our guests to the cabins and explain everything to them because we feel it is that extra personal touch instead of just handing over a key and letting them search out the cabin and then figure out the guess work on how everything works. We do apologize if this ruined the moment for you, it was not our intention at all! If you are a future guest reading this review, please let us know if you do not want to be shown the intricacies of the cabin and we will happily just provide you with the key.

We were not asked to put the champagne on ice, if it was requested of us of course we could do it. Otherwise we will place it in the fridge to keep it chilled.

Regarding the bath salts and the decaf coffee not being replaced in the cabin. We had a new house keeper and this was obviously overlooked. We do offer our profuse apologies for this. This should not have been overlooked. For future guests, please come and find us or give us a call and we will be sure to find what you are looking for. Also, we always have extra coffee packets in the dining room with the guest snacks.

The ice machine was not working at the time these guests were here, therefore we offered to go and get ice for them, but we were told that it was not necessary. However, upon reading this review apparently it was.

We were on site the whole time these guests were here to provide them dinner reservations, print out maps to their chosen restaurants or give them directions, as we normally do for all of our guests. We told them as they were checking in we can provide dinner recommendations. All they had to do was ask.

Also we are not exactly a remote location. We are located within the town of Carson, the next town, Stevenson, is only 5 minutes away and has several dinning options. Then Hood River is only 20 minutes away with further dining options.

Regarding breakfast, our favorite topic around here! We are foodies, and strive to provide a breakfast that will stay with the hardiest of hikers, out typical guests. We have a number of recipes that we use, so some days we will have muffins, some days it will be creme brullee french toast or a peach cobler, along with an egg-based dish, along with fruit and yogurt. If the breakfast is delivered to the cabin, it has to fit in the baskets they are delivered in. It is for this reason that it won't feed a basketball team, but it will leave you more than satisfied.

We do have a good selection of DVDs however by no means are we a movie rental house. We have movies of all genres, half of them in the romance/drama genres, the other half of various selections to suit everyone's taste.

We hope that the few not-so-favorable reviews do not outweigh the hundreds of excellent ones we've received. We take guest feedback very seriously, but more seriously is the attention we give you while you're here. If you find that you aren't satisfied with something we've provided (or failed to provide), please let us know immediately so we can make changes while you're here to enjoy them.
