We went here with friends who have a home close by. This is just a little tavern, not a huge selection of drinks even...but the food is actually quite good! I had the shrimp basket, as did several others in our party, while the rest had the fish basket. Everything was fresh and delicious. I've had the oysters there on other visits, and they're good as well...but that's to be expected as there are oyster beds and clam digging everywhere. Service is slow and a bit apathetic, but the food makes it worthwhile. Make this your stop on Hwy 101 in the Brinnon area!

The very small roadside town of Brinnon, WA, sitting on the west side of the beautiful, deep and long Hood Canal on the Olympic Penninsula, isn't very memorable, but on the east side of U.S. Highway 101 toward sthe south end of town sits a true undiscovered gem of a roadside /restaurant/lounge/tavern/pub -- take your pick. Well, it was undiscovered until Esquire Magazine found it, called it a "rustic paradise" and listed it in their Top Ten Best Bars in America! And not just once -- three times!!!

Although it is formally known as the Geoduck (say, "gooey duck") Restaurant Lounge, it is known by almost everyone as the Geoduck Tavern. The tavern part is a wide open sitting area and bar in the center of the restaurant, surrounded by tables for eating, and minors can be in this part of the premises. There's also a view sundeck overlooking the Dosewallips River estuary where it meets Hood Canal.

Although the view is pleasant and the beer plentiful and cold, it's the food most people come here for. Much of it is bar food, sure, but bar food elevated to a new level of preparation, freshness and taste. There are burgers, a variety of thick, tasty sandwiches, salads, fries, onion rings, etc. all terrific. The burger dip sandwich is -- are you ready -- a one pound burger on a big bun that is easily one of the biggest burgers, with all the trimmings, we've ever seen. On our last visit there with our classic T-Bird car club, two men ordered it, stared in amazement when it arrived, then had a discussion on how best to eat it, finally deciding on the "squish it down to get it in your mouth" method. My wife and I had on our first visit a year earlier fallen in love with their big, fresh, juicy, locally-caught salmon burgers, and revisited them again, with a side of perfectly done big onion rings, an ice tea and soda, both refillable, and two cups of remarkable, homemade clam chowder, just, well, swimming with clams -- all for just $27, including tax!

You can also order a varierty of dinner entrees and dishes, although each time we've been there, it's been for lunch and those outstanding, juicy salmon burgers.

If you are ever on a scenic drive around Hood Canal -- and it's an excellent way to spend a few hours -- consider stopping here for a touch of local color and excellent food.
