The federal government has poured tons of money in an effort to revive a formerly dismal part of downtown Bremerton. The Harborside Fountain Park is part of that effort, and is a most welcome and very nice addition to the waterfront right next to the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard entrance. The Park is well landscaped and decorated with naval memorabilia. Unfortunately vandals have already begun attacking the monuments. It is a nice place to walk and see the picturesque inlet that is frequented by large naval ships, the WA State ferries, and private boats.

Once you get off the ferry in Bremerton you'll see fountains as you walk around the area on both sides of the ferry landing. It is worth taking some time ate each site. You can grab a meal at several locations, or a cup of coffee at Starbucks or Coffee Oasis. On a warm day you'll see children playing in some of the fountains.

This park, built on what used to be part of the naval shipyard's property, has been a real asset to Bremerton's landscape. It's a lovely place to sit and watch the ferry traffic to and from Seattle. Then there are the five mesmerizing spouting fountains (which look like submarine 'sails'), and the shallow pools they fill, where you can wade and splash (during the warmer months!); even if you know they're going to "erupt" it's always rather a surprise when they do, as they run on a very random schedule. I live about 7 miles away and have taken the local bus service down there just to enjoy a picnic lunch at the tables scattered along the walkway. I've lived in Bremerton my whole life and seen it basically die when Penney's, Sears, and the other major stores moved to Silverdale's new mall in the early 80s; that left only two or three business still in existence, and pretty much a ghost town. Over the years there have been numerous plans proposed for revitalization of the downtown area, but nothing ever happened until about 7 years ago; and then I was excessively pleased when our mayor actually got things moving: we have a great boardwalk, with a Blackberry Festival in September, several more park areas - also with water features, a new movie theater/parking garage, more restaurants, and people really going downtown and enjoying themselves. Long time coming, but Bremerton is finally coming back to life, and this park is a big part of that resurrection. Give it a visit!

We used to enjoy taking the ferry from Seattle to Bainbridge Island, mostly for the fun and scenic ferry ride. Now that we've spent time in Bremerton.....I think that the destination is as worthwhile as the ferry ride. The ferry ride is one hour, so you have plenty of time to relax, explore and take pictures of the beautiful scenery from the boat. When you get off the boat there is an expansive wonderfully landscaped park full of fun, creatively designed fountains to enjoy. Within a short walk you will find a marina, museums, a variety of restaurants, art galleries and shops and even a puppet museum! Bremerton has so much to do and see, Haborside Fountain Park is the perfect gateway!
