After a VERY LONG drive from the interior of the state, I was famished. My motel was right across the street and so, after unpacking, I ambled on over to Diego's. on the recommendation of the motel owner, a Korean gentleman. I should have thought twice about that. Diego's abuts another eatery, which seemed to be more lively and busy, but I was craving Mexican, so...
There is something inherently wrong when entering an ethnic establishment and seeing no one matching that ethnicity. I will not eat Chinese food amongst a sea of Caucasian staff. And such the was case here: No one even vaguely resembling a south-of-the-border native could be seen behind the counter. Oh, well. I was hungry and tired, in that order.
Ordering is done at the counter and the food either brought to the table or... not. I saw both during my short visit. I ordered a burrito and two tacos, and asked for them to be made picante - Spanish for spicy. The young white woman behind the counter smiled and asked me what that meant. Okay... onward. I translated, paid and waited.
I sat a table, with my drink, perusing a local rag. My order was brought out to me. I asked for salsa - which I had done at the counter, earlier - and some was brought to me. I surveyed the plate and decided right then and there that the next time I saw no ethnic faces in such a place, I was wheeling right around and exiting, immediately.
The was properly hot and steaming, but the tastes... the refried beans & rice seemed to be from a package, not scratch made. The bready tortilla was mushy, not chewy. All in all, less than mediocre, much less. And for the prices charged, close to being a rip-off.
Next time... I'll just cook in my motel room. At least I will know what to expect.
If you like fish tacos where the fish is prominent instead of a batter or grease then you'll love these. Grilledvwhite fish, guacamole and shredded purple cabbage on corn tortillas. This is the college place you come back to. Unassuming in decor but good basic food. Brown rice options as well. I now compare any other fish tacos to these ones.
Not a good visit. Tacos were good but not worth the price. Rice was dry and bland, beans were likewise flavorless. The place was dirty. Just another lackluster Mexican place.
Grabbed a couple of burritos for a quick lunch and the service and food were high quality. Easy off and on freeway. For small place a large menu.
