“Loved this hotel!”
Reviewed July 15, 2007

We found this hotel to be an exceptional experience. Cosy, comfortable king size bed, beautiful soft linens and pillows, a perfect setting, friendly staff, and peaceful waterviews. All in all, the Hotel Bellwether was much more that we expected. We will definitely stay there again and, in fact, are planning another visit next month.

Fantastic setting and a great view from the third floor, and while the rooms are luxuriously appointed with a fireplace, balcony, wet bar, quality bed and linens, and a large bathroom with separate jetted tub and glassed-in shower, the furnishings are beginning to show signs of age, wear and tear and the shower tiles in our room showed and smelled a little moldy.

Lunch at the restaurant downstairs was really good (try the Coconut Lime Seafood Chowder if they have it....fabulous!) and the huge bustling Anthony's just a block away was surprisingly good as well. Wireless internet access was free and flawless.

The boiler for hot water in the hotel went on the fritz while we were there and the management kindly slipped a letter of explanation under the door at night so that we knew what was going on. We didn't have any hot water the second day, though, and when we checked out no compensation was offered, though they did give us a $25 refund on our credit card after asking. There was also a loud fan humming on and off the entire day and most of the night (central airconditioning
for the hotel perhaps?).

We loved the quaint town of Bellingham and its very scenic surroundings, and for the most part, we enjoyed our stay at the Bellwether and would probably consider staying there again on our next visit because of the beautiful setting and room amenities.

We have stayed at the Bellwether a few times now and each time have been extremely satisfied. The beds are wonderful. Gas fireplace and jetted tub definitely a plus!! The setting on the water is perfect. You can walk along the waterfront or just enjoy the view from your room. Hotel management has been friendly and professional and restaurant service and food always prompt and courteous. We would recommend this hotel.

Booked two months in advance for family reunion. Detailed description of spacious one bedroom suite with king and comfortable pull out.

Upon arrival, no on helped with bags, poor directions to parking, ended up in building next door. When we finally got to the room, carpet was stained, windows filthy, old food wrappers on floor, dog kibbles under bed, table tops sticky and upholstery worn and grimy.

Not enough towels for three and no linen for fold out, other bed not a king. Complained to front desk who at first tried to talk around the issues then told him to get the manager. They offered us another room which turned out to be the room first described when reservations were made. Nicer and bigger but charged 9.95 for internet.

DInner good in restaraunt but the continental breakfast was pathetic. Rubbery cold scrambled eggs, stale hard bread, apples and oranges with cold cereal.

The staff tried to be nice but the lack of hospitality training was obvious. We felt ripped off even though we made the best of it because we were happy to have a family reunion.

We stayed two nights at this hotel in July, 2006. The feature that attracted us was that it is a totally non-smoking hotel. And they are strict about the non-smoking rule, which was fine with us. When we arrived we discovered that the parking is secure underground, always a comfort to us. The staff were friendly and helpful. We were travelling with our two teenagers so had a one-bedroom suite with them in one room and us (the parents) in the other . The door between the two is lockable.

The water view was wonderful and both nights we were there we had beautiful sunsets. We didn't like that fact that there was a large tent set up for receptions on the patio outside our room and the top of the tent partially blocked our water view. If this is important to you ask for the third floor as the tent is not that high. If you like boats there is a large marina right outside. When we were there one of the tall ships was tied up at the marina. There is also a Coast Guard station nearby.

There is a well-equiped gym and this is a nice place for walkers or runners. You can run along the water, around the marina and along a kind of water-front park seawall. My son and I went for this run from the hotel and it took about half an hour.

The hotel puts on a continental breakfast each morning but it costs $7.00 which we thought was kind of cheap on their part given the price of the room. The two other hotels we stayed at in Washington State included the cost of the continental breakfast in the cost of the room. We didn't try the restaurant at this hotel for lunch or dinner but it looked nice.

There are a few restaurants around the area but you pretty well have to drive to any shopping or sightseeing in Bellingham. That's not really a big issue though as Bellngham is not that large. From this hotel to the Fairhaven District, which we enjoyed for the shops (great book store), took about 10 minutes. Same to the Belles Fair Mall.

We would stay there again.

We just returned from 2 nights at the Bellwether. The setting on the water appealed to us, but in reality it is a very sterile setting. The "plaza" side rooms have really no view. There is nothing around the hotel, except a view offices and an Anthony's. Our room had a broken chair and lamp and a clock that was off by 1:13. For a hotel at the Bellwether's price range, I expect free internet access. The Bellwether charges $9.95 per day. There is a folding door/window between the bathtub (barely large enough for one person to sit upright in) and the bed. While that is a cute idea in actuality it means the noises and smells from the bathroom invade the bedroom. The heating/cooling system is quite noisy for a fairly new place.

At best there is nothing particularly special about the Bellwether. If the rooms were $40 a night less they would be fairly priced, although still not a great value. Save your money. There are plenty of very decent places in Bellingham for far less. There are also nicer places at rates similar to the Bellwether.
