“Great eats, good fun!”

Bellingham Farmers Market

Four of us (two couples) traveled down to Bellingham WA on the Alaska Marine Highway and spent several wonderful days roaming around Bellingham. We really enjoyed the Mt. Baker Highway (Rte. 542), the Plover Ferry out of Blaine, the Art Walk in Bellingham, and of course, the Bellingham Farmer's Market. Lots of great food to eat and food to buy, fun entertainment, arts and crafts--a terrific way for families, couples, or individuals to spend a few hours eating and people watching. Be sure to get there early as several booths ran out of food. From the market, you can take a walk or ride on the bike trail too (especially if you eat a lot, as we did)!

The Bellingham Farmers Market is open every Saturday, 10 AM to 3 PM, starting on the first Saturday in April and running to the Saturday before Christmas. At the height of the growing season there will be over 100 vendors: vegetable and fruit growers, prepared food providers (Indian, Ethiopian, Greek, Thai, bakery, meats, cheeses, etc.), and crafts people. Disclaimer: I attend this market regularly to help my daughter sell her husband's superb pottery. No matter -- my review here is based on the food I manage to cram in or pack to take home (San Juan Island), and my favorite buskers.

First the food: you'll find a favorite, I'm sure, but I can't let the day go by without a combination plate from India Grill and a Caprese sandwich with eggplant from Brandywine. For dessert, Breadfarm, any of their cookies or muffins. In between, fruit in season from Tiny's or other fruit growers.

For entertainment -- once again, you'll find your favorite. Mine are the Buckingham sisters string quartet and the hurdy-gurdy (authentic French instrument) man; also Malcolm the bagpiper, on the rare occasions he shows up. I can see that others appreciate these musicians just by looking at the amount of tips left in their cases, and by the length of time people will stop and listen.

Little children with you? No problem: there are face painters, balloon people and other attractions for children. I see a lot of 2 to 4 year olds held enchanted by the musicians or dancing to the music. Older people? There are benches and picnic tables for a sit-down.

Ignore the grump who tells you, "I don't want to pay higher prices at farmers markets just because they say it's organic." A recent study showed that many prices were lower at the local farmers market than at the local supermarket. It's logical: the food isn't transported so far. I expect you'll save money for another reason, as well: the fruits and vegetables have been picked less than 24 hours before they're brought to market, sometimes less than four hours. This food will last longer than the supermarket produce -- and taste fresher for at least the first six days in your refrigerator (if you don't eat it up first).
