Good ramen and definitely an improvement for Bellevue. Portions were a bit on the small side compared to traditional ramen houses in Japan and Vancouver BC (where my favorite is). Their soft boiled egg is perfection and I like that they serve it whole rather than cut. On my first visit, it was chaotic. The "host" was not very helpful and rather than take names, he made me write my own name on the list. I also think that he was seating people out of order. Granted they were packed for lunch but we're all rushed for time during lunch time. Once seated the serve was great and my friends who speak Japanese struck up a short conversation with one of the two chefs from Japan who was helping to start the place.

this place is legit good.

i don't understand the average reviews, this place is pretty darn good. and i'm not even that big of a ramen fan. (okay, shoot me, i'm asian and i'm not fawning over ramen houses!).

i came here recently for a work lunch and this place did not disappoint.

the food:
actually REALLY good. i was kind of concerned when pulling up to this place at 11am on a weekday. it was dead, it's in the middle of this strip mall area of SE bellevue, something didn't seem right. we had shared the octopus, spinach, chicken wings, and tempura veggies to start. all verrrrry tasty. especially those octopus dumplings, mmm. then i had the veggie ramen and asked for little salt per the server's suggestion. the broth was SO tasty, i wish i could've ordered 2 more helpings of the broth. it's perfect for these cold days we've been having; and a great alternative to all the pho options in the area. we, unfortunately, did not get any of the sorbet dessert (they come in martini glasses and looked mighty tasty), but i'm determined to come back with the boy soon so he can have the full experience.

the service:
top notch. they're all japanese and super friendly. plenty of helpful recommendations and our server remembered one of the people in our party and his preferences. that's service. :)

this is now my go-to place for craving a big warm soup. and the noodles are tasty as well! so go and enjoy. it's a little gem in our barren east-side restaurant environment.

We were pretty excited to hear about Kukai Ramen coming to Bellevue and once they opened, we heard that there were long lines waiting to get in. My wife and I finally went there on a Sunday soon after they opened at 11 a.m. The small restaurant was mostly filled except for a few tables near the door. The cold winter air poured in each time the door opened, so our table near the door was not the best, but I'll admit that the server did warn us about this. We just didn't want to wait for a table further back to open up. As it turned out, we ended up waiting for 35 minutes to get our bowls of ramen, which in my opinion is way too long to get served for a bowl of ramen, no matter how good it is. I don't understand the reason for the long wait, as the restaurant seemed to have plenty of staff, both in the kitchen and elsewhere. The ramen was flavorful and attractively presented, but we both agreed that the broth was way too salty, and I'm one who generally likes things on the salty side. The music was loud and geared toward a younger crowd. The prices were on the high side, but not unreasonable for the food quality. The interior decor was very nice and the restroom design was first class, but I doubt that we'll be going back anytime soon based on our experience. This restaurant has potential, but it needs some work.
