If you love history you will love this 1776 resturant !! You do however need to know your history in order to order your delicious food ! If you do not dont blame the wait staff or the cook it is you that is to blame ! Has authentic food served at the time during our country's independence !! 1776 !! Very wonderfully patriotic !! Delicious!!!!

“Atmosphere nice-food ok-a little over priced.”
Reviewed July 5, 2013 via mobile

Ate there on July 3rd 2013. Building itself was beautiful and history fascinating. It was pouring rain the day we ate and rainwater was running down the inside of the wall next to our table. We did not get wet and we're OK with that because of the age and historical significance of the building. Our waitress was nice and attentive. We ordered spinach artichoke appetizer. It was very good and sufficient in quantity but not extremely large. Because we had been traveling and eating plenty of fast food we were anxious to consume some vegetables. My husband and I both ordered the four veggie plate for about $11. The green beans were described as spicy on the menu however the waitress assured us they were not. I would describe them as flavorful but not spicy. The fancy grits were fried grit patties with pepper jelly on top. My husband enjoyed them, I thought they were okay. The stuffed squash was very good. It was a half of a small yellow squash stuff with onion, crackers, and cheese. We both wished we had more of that. The wild rice was basically your Uncle Ben's. For 5 dollars extra my husband substituted a small specialty salad for one of his vegetables. It was a good size salad and VERY delicious. It had assorted greens with feta cheese in a raspberry vinaigrette. The children both got cheese pizza with a side of broccoli. The broccoli was slightly warmer then room temperature but they were okay with that. The sauce on the cheese pizza was slightly spicy and 1 child stated it was too spicy to eat. We did not try any meat entrees. If we were to go back we would both order the specialty salad as a meal. We paid about $64 for the appetizer, the two vegetable trays with the upgrade of the salad, and two children meals, and one cup of milk (the rest of us drank water). Overall we thought it was overpriced but you were paying for the historical building.

“Won't be coming back.”
Reviewed July 4, 2013

This place was so promising. The ambiance was super. The food was inventive and overall really good. But then we sat unattended for over a half hour after everyone was completely finished with their dinner. The waiter, who had been plenty attentive before we ordered, basically disappeared after our food arrived. We passed the time talking while our empty plates sat on the table, but eventually it became really frustrating to be trapped in this restaurant with no dinner check. The waiter finally showed up and could see that we were irritated from being neglected. He said he'd be right back with the checks (we were a table of 6 with a check for 4 people and a check for 2 people). Over 15 minutes later, he returned with the checks and mumbled something about the 20% gratuity being automatically added for large groups. No wonder he neglected us. He would get a good tip even if he treated us poorly, which he did. When we pointed out how long we had waited for the checks, he said he had other tables to take care of. WHAT??? Oh, I see. The other tables didn't have the automatic gratuity so he had to actually give them good service, I guess. Another thing: when you pay at this restaurant, you actually have to wait in a line at the cashier to check out. Something was wrong with the credit card machine and we had to wait a very, very long time once again. There were about 20 people standing in a line that extended out the door who were simply waiting to pay for their dinners and be on their way. Everyone was completely exasperated. It was totally ridiculous. Then another diner walked right up to the counter to pay, obliviously passing up everyone waiting in line, and the cashier was actually going to take her check before everybody else without telling her there was a line to pay. It took someone standing in line to tell the diner we were all waiting to pay. Good grief. Then when the cashier/hostess was confronted with how terrible the whole situation was, she chose to spout off about how she just works there two days a week for minimum wage - instead of getting the manager like she should have. The wait staff at this restaurant do not seem to care about your dining experience. I suppose they get a lot of travelers like us, so they are not necessarily concerned about repeat business. Too bad. I was looking for a restaurant where we could return year after year on our travels. I assure you, it won't be this one.

Built in 1776, this restaurant has great food, a great atmosphere, and a friendly staff.

While waiting for your meal wander through the restaurant and discover all the little quirks that make this more than just a restaurant in a historic building.

The pasta bella was delicious!

“Great experience on the road!”
Reviewed June 27, 2013

We love to find local establishments when we're traveling. So much nicer than the usual safe generic fair. This place was a great find. Loved the ambiance, our waiter was knowledgable and helpful, and the food was very good. Did not find it to be pricey. The stuffed pork was excellent, and my husband and I both enjoyed the grits very much. I commented I'd like to try to find the recipe. The buttermilk pie was also a treat.
