I like hikes with a destination. This one climbs upward following the falls to a great viewing area. Visitors should take the warning signs to heart and stay off the falls. It seems that we hear of someone who ignores them and dies as a result every couple of years. You need to be a little fit as this is an uphill climb from the parking lot.

Wintergreen is a great place to go as a family, with friends, and ages can find something to do. We love Labor Day weekend. The crowd is down, the hiking iis cooler, the festivals are in full swing. We get a house or large townhouse and enjoy family games, movies, swimming, the lake, and hot tubs!

My boyfriend and I have done this twice. The first time was 2010, Thanksgiving weekend. We had not planned to hike so were no really dressed properly (wrong footwear, not to be out in the cold long, it started to snow flurry!). We did not climb all the way to the top. Did again Sept 2012 and made it all the way. Falls are pretty (it was pretty in the winter with the frozen spots). Obviously water flow will differ depending on if recently rained or not. Not a real strenuous walk (we're not hikers, there were kids, parents carrying infants and seniors) but there is uneven surface (rocky) and lots of man-made stairs. But if you're not in a hurry, you should be fine. The final overlook has spot where you could easily have lunch (you can get picnic supplies at the Montebello Store on Rt 56, note lunch counter closes at 2 pm). No bathroom facilities at top, portopotty at the bottom. Parking is just $3 (cash only, there is an envelope and then you put a tag on your rearview mirror). If you're a more experienced hiker, this can be an access point to the Appalachian Trail.

Be prepared to climb an insane number of steps on a 1.7 mile hike uphill. The view is astonishing. and the facilities are good. $3 parking fee

It is one of the few things to do in this part of VA. It's an easy hike with various views of an average waterfall. Not bad. Not great.
