“Lovely inn right on the edge of the historic district”
Reviewed May 7, 2011

A lovely inn right on the edge of Historic Williamsburg, with friendly and helpful host and staff, filling breakfasts and self-service evening snacks.

The rooms are up a steep flight of stairs (the owner carried up our bags) in a fairly quiet street in the Merchants Square area. The bed was very comfortable and there was a small TV in the room. The en-suite bathroom had a shower, wash basin and toilet and was kept clean during our stay.

The host, Billie Scruggs, was genial and helpful and gave us some excellent sightseeing advice. Some have commented on the lack of variety in the breakfasts, but we found the cooked items tasty and filling, with lovely fruit salad and coffee, served in the homely dining area. In the afternoon/evening there was self-service home-made cookies and lemonade, as well as coffee/tea/hot chocolate.

It was wonderful being so close to the historic area, because, even though we were tired on our arrival at mid-day after a long overnight journey, we were able to look around the histric buildings during the afternoon. Car parking was just accross the street from the inn, which was absolutely fine and we never had any problem getting a space.

One of the main reasons we chose this inn was that, besides being in a convenient location, it was offered in a package deal with Historic Triangle passes. In fact I think we barely broke even on this, compared to individual day tickets, as we only here for 3 nights, and had time for two half day visits to the Colonial Williamsburg area, and one visit each to Jamestown, the Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown, but at least it saved some queing.

Wi-Fi was available but we did not get a good signal in our room (perhaps our PC Wi-Fi is insensitive), but there was no problem connecting in the dining/lounge area.

Although the host does not live in the inn, so was not always present, he is only just over the road and said we could phone anytime day or night if we needed anything, which in fact we did not.

We like the intimacy of a small, personally run inn, in prefecence to a larger tourist chain hotel, so this inn suited us perfectly, and if we are able to return to Williamsburg in future we would certainly stay here again.

We stayed there for this past easter weekend and had a lovely time. I am not one who normally stays at B&B's but from the time we checked in to the time we left it was a wonderful experience. Their location is excellent and the inn keeper(Billy) is a great source of recommendations. The inn is 2 blocks from everything around merchants square and 1 block from Colonial williamsburg. We never drove anywhere which was great. My only gripe: morning coffee was very weak! Definetly a great spot and a great place! From May to October there is a great farmers market in Merchants square 1 block from the inn on Saturdays from 8A-12P; definetly worth stopping by.

We traveled with our 6 year old daughter and had a great experience at the Fife and Drum. The location could not be beat! The inn was clean and bright. Owners were friendly and helpful. Would definitely stay at the Fife and Drum next time we are in Williamsburg.

I've lived in Williamsburg and visited as a tourist, this was my first time at Fife and Drum, and I would definitely go back. First - it is walking distance to Amtrak, W&M, and colonial williamsburg, so you can get there and even stay for a couple of days without a car. Another high point are the rooms - spacious, with great beds (we got there early and peeked in pretty much all of them). Towels and bathrobes were fluffy, and we even had access to a balcony off of our room. Staff was friendly and helpful, but not intrusive. Breakfast was not as extensive as at some B&B's, but no complaints. Note that the Inn is a second-floor walk up, so not ideal if you have problems with stairs (but it is only one flight).

Perfect location for walking to all of historic Williamsburg. Restauants and bars also close. Breakfasts were delicious and they even share recipes! Owners were knowledgeable and helpful. Room and bed quite comfortable. All around great place to stay.

Room Tip: Off season helps!

Inn was charming within walking distance to many amenities and Historic places to see.
The atmosphere of the place was added to with artistically placed Colonial accents.
Owners and staff were most helpful and were available whenever required.

My daughter and I traveled to Williamsburg for a visit to the College of William & Mary. She stayed on campus with friends and I stayed at the Fife & Drum and had a wonderful stay. The Inn was centrally located in Williamsburg, only 1 block from campus as well as across the street from Historic Williamsburg, and only two blocks away from the Amtrak Train station. The Inn is very clean and my room and bathroom was like new but keeping with the period. I truly felt like I was staying at home with all the conveniences. The people at the Inn were all so gracious and pleasant to speak with. Very informative about the town as well as the University as well! My daughter has now accepted admission to the University there, so I'm sure I'll be staying their upon every visit over the next four years.
