First off, I should mention that I did not read the reviews prior to visiting this campground with my 2 children. However, when that first train rolls thru at 11:59 Pm and then follows with an encore at 2:30 and then follows up every hour or so and your tenting 7 feet away from the rails, it can turn a vacation from a pleasant experience to one that isn’t. If you are tenting YOU CANT USE THIS FACILITY, you won’t be able to sleep for more than an hour at a time and I mean these are coal trains rumbling thru, they are very loud. If you have an RV, maybe but don’t even consider this site if your tenting it.
The owners and workers are very nice and accommodating which is why I even gave it 2 stars, but I was not able to sleep.

I will not visit this facility again.

Anvil Campground is a 2013 winner of a "Certificate of Excellence" from TripAdvisor! We rank in the top 10% of all businesses on TripAdvisor!
We appreciate your review, your business, and the opportunity to have you as our guest! We hope you enjoyed your time in Williamsburg.
Anvil Campground has been here since 1954. For 59 years and three generations, we have provided great family memories for tens of thousands of families. Our customer service will never be beat, because there is nothing that we will not do to make our guests happy. There is a train track that runs through Williamsburg itself and can be heard at Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, other Williamsburg attractions, shopping areas, residences, hotels, and campgrounds. For nearly every one of our guests the train is not an issue, if it ever is we do everything in our power to make a guest happy by moving them to another site farther away from the train track. There is no set schedule for when the train will pass. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please contact me directly and I will be glad to speak with you.

We spent a couple of nights at Anvil this past weekend, ending a trip through Eastern Shore. We were heading back to Richmond and wanted one more stop. We had stayed at Anvil before with good experience and wanted to try it again.

Why we like Anvil so much is that it is well run and friendly to guests. Chris and the gang are very accommodating. It is not a huge ghetto style RV park nor a snobby class A only Park. What it is, is a good place to relax and enjoy the world and your RV experience.

We travel for business so almost all of our overnights are just that and we have to take what we can get. Sometimes good and others not. But we are going to put Anvil on our list of get always close to home and use it as much as we can. Lived in VA all my life and now I am going to see something of Williamsburg. Plenty of restaurants near by as well as the myriad of Outlet Malls.

By the way, someone earlier complained about the CSX Tracks right at the RV park. Suits me, I am a railroad buff and love it. Plus that is a symbol of economy working as it is mostly coal going to Portsmouth to be loaded on ships for export and empties going back for more.

We are seasoned RV'rs so we feel we can do a fair eval. Spent 4 nights here, convenient to Colonial Williamsburg, site was fine but had no idea we would be literally sandwiched between a busy RR and busy highway. Keep your AC's running to help modify the noise. Sites are tight but adequate.

Enjoyed Anvil and the Williamsburg area. People have commented on the Railroad tracks that are next to the campground but I have to say we had no issue with this in our motorhome. Very nice and quaint campground. Service was great.

Stayed for 3 nights for our Williamsburg visit. Very nice campground. We would stay again. The train tracks are close, but we actually liked them. Good location and great friendly staff. We heard negative comments about the KOA so decided on this instead. Very happy.

Arrived late in the day and got our tent pitched just before dark. Everything was great. Very easy to find - follow the campground signs. We went out to dinner and returned ready for a good nights sleep...then WHOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! We had no idea that we were literally 20 feet from the train tracks. Needless to say, it was a brutal first night of surprises as the trains seemed to pass on a consistent basis all night long. At one point, I counted to see how long one train would be passing and I gave up when I got to a 45 second count. If you like trains, then this campground is perfect. The grounds are clean and nice - a small pool that is great for the kids to enjoy and location is close to everything. We did have an ant problem with ants falling from a tree above us - since we did not eat at our campsite, this was disconcerting but hey, ants need a place too...

Room Tip: Select a site as far from the tracks as possible. If you are a tent camper, no such luck.

We stayed at Anvil for a little more than a week. Had a great time. Simply put, I can't think/remember a campground with a friendlier, more eager to help staff (camping for 25+ years, now with three kids of my own). We had issues with the electric on the second night, but the staff were up all night trying to fix the issue. They had it resolved the following day. Trains are VERY close and loud, but even in our pop-up you got used to them, or at least learned to tolerate them. All in all, I would stay again if given the choice.
