I really liked this campground, its staff and the amenities. I am putting this review out there to help other campers be truly prepared. First, the good. The staff is super friendly and helpful, the grounds are beautifully maintained and very clean, the campsites are nice, with power, water, tables, fire rings, and even fences between each to preserve your "space". There are several playgrounds and a lovely pool; our kids enjoyed the facility very much.

I've got to be honest, the trains are a real problem for tent campers. The tent sites are literally thirty feet from the edge of the track. The first night we stayed, eight trains came by between midnight and 7:30 am. Most were freight trains, and they took 1-2 minutes to pass. If you are in a tent, it is downright frightening. The second night, five trains went by in the night. I know exactly how many, I wrote each down on my iPod because I couldn't sleep. Earplugs were no help.

If you are in an RV or a cabin, I can see the trains maybe being not too much of an issue. A few walls and doors would probably be enough to make the noise tolerable. The location relative to Williamsburg is definitely nice. But as a tent camper, I cannot give it my recommendation. Their offer to relocate you to another site doesn't really help; who wants to undo and redo two hours of camp set-up?

Room Tip: Avoid 1-12 and 60-67.

We appreciate your review, your business, and the opportunity to have you as our guest!
Anvil Campground has been here since 1954. For 59 years and three generations, we have provided great family memories for tens of thousands of families. Our customer service will never be beat, because there is nothing that we will not do to make our guests happy.
There is a train track that runs through Williamsburg itself and can be heard at other campgrounds, Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, other Williamsburg attractions, shopping areas, residences, and hotels. For nearly every one of our guests the train is not an issue, if it ever is we do everything in our power to make a guest happy by moving them to another site farther away from the train track. There is no set schedule for when the train will pass. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please contact me directly and I will be glad to speak with you.

Chris, our experience at Anvil was positive. The trains did not bother us, however, we were in a class A motorhome and had the air conditioners on since it was quite warm during our stay. Perhaps tent and pop up campers may have a problem with the trains.

Ray and Debra were most friendly and helpful. We would stay with you again without hesitation. A very convenient location.

My wife and I have stayed twice and will do so again. Very friendly, knowledgeable about the area, they have a shuttle that will take you to bush gardens, and all of the historical places, and shopping. There is a train track close by but my wife and I have fun with it. I put coins on the track and have the train run over them for lucky coins. We have a 43' coach and have enough room to get around. They have a pool, playground , a general store, an arcade and cabins to stay in. They also allow pets.

Anvil is a great place to stay while visiting Williamsburg. We love the location and how it's close to everything! A huge perk to the campground is how it sets off the main road so you get that off the beaten path feel, but are super close to anything you could need! The staff there is amazing. Everyone is super friendly, the sites are perfectly set up and the cleanliness of the campground is unmatched by any other! By the way, the trains aren't so bad! Once the first one runs down the track you barely notice any others.
This is a must stay when you're in the area!

The trains were really loud. Woke up everybody every 3 hours in the middle of the night. I was hoping the campground was closer to Busch Gardens. It's good that the grounds are close to restaurants. The comfort rooms were clean.

We really enjoyed our stay hear. Great location to local attractions. Yes it is near the train tracks. If a little train noise bothers you then maybe you can overlook it and focus more on the cleanliness, friendly atmosphere, and well maintained surroundings.

Extremely disappointed...railroad tracks 30 feet from campsite with at least a dozen trains passing throughout the day. Adjacent sites are so close you can hear what others are saying inside their camper. Our site was littered with paper and ashes as the fire ring had been moved so a seasonal resident could park his truck in front of our area. To top off the stay, a drunk seasonal resident walked into our camper at 9 PM at night. Once we got her to leave, she and her comapnion next door argued loudly for the next hour. While walking the dogs later that night, the same woman was walking around and asked me to call her a cab! Unbelievable!!! would not recommend this campground to anyone who wants to get away for a quiet vacation.

This kind of incident is very isolated, as we have had no such reported issues in my memory. We were notified of this issue and the guest was removed immediately. Anvil Campground does not tolerate any such behavior. We have a zero tolerance policy. We are not a party campground; we are a safe campground that caters to seniors and families.
Our campground caters to our nightly guests. Any seasonal guests here from time to time are for a very short term only. We have no guests whom live on our property. We do not allow it.
