There is only one problem with this campground, THE TRAINS! They are so close to some of the sites that your camper will literally shake. And the noise can be deafening. They also run all hours of the day and night. So, with that said, this is a very clean campground, and well-maintained. And the staff are superior. They took plenty of time to share their knowledge of the area, tell you how to get the best prices at some local attractions, and were just very helpful.

Thank you for your compliments of our superior cleanliness, our well manicured facility, and our number one staff! I am so sorry you had an issue with the train. Anvil Campground has been here since 1954. For 58 years and three generations, we have provided great family memories for tens of thousands of families. Our customer service will never be beat, because there is nothing that we will not do to make our guests happy. For 99% of our guests the train is not an issue, if it ever is an issue, we do everything in our power to make a guest happy by moving them to another site farther away from the train track. There are no set times for when the train will pass, it could be zero or it could be five, but every time it does, our guest are able to witness history to how our great nation became what it is today. Trains were the backbone to the birth of our great nation and still power us to be what we are today. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please contact me directly. Take care.

This campground was so clean and well maintained. The workers were more than polite and helpful. I actually enjoyed the train passing through and would recomend this place for anyone who wants to be close to all attractions.

We never dreamed we would be sleeping so close to an active train track. If one had derailed we would be dead. Don't understand why anyone would put a camp ground, the tenters no less 10 feet from the tracks. No sleep to be had here. Bathrooms clean.

The family owned Anvil campground is great for someone without a trailing car. There is a bus for $2 a person (all day transit) that will take you to the 'central hub'. From there you can easily and quickly transfer to the next line to take you to the historic sites.
The owner Ray was very helpful to us as we were traveling with a 38' Pace Arrow for the first time ever and truly had no idea how to connect, dump or get the generator going! Talk about novices..but Ray had patience, knowledge and enlisted the help of our neighbor to walk us through the process. Prior to arrival, Ray asked whether we had a Passport which would have resulted in a large discount so we contacted them, received a link to show at the campsite and Ray honored the 50% rate.
Now the slight downside (I really mean SLIGHT) is the train issue. There is a train track that runs very nearby the campsites but the only time it really would have affected us was sleeping. Having read the information about the train prior to arriving, we just bought earplugs and slept soundly and comfortably for 2 nights.
The little general store was filled with items that any camper would need and the outside showers (since we couldn't figure out how to get hot water!) were fabulously strong and very clean.
The overall experience was wonderful and when we return to Williamsburg we will definitely stay at Anvil again. We were there early March and the weather was mild, several sites were occupied and people were very friendly. There were swingsets and what looked like a fun summer activity area with a pool, horseshoe area and lots of 'green' space. While we were there, with the weather mild, Ray and his staff were planting and preparing for the summer rush! Enjoy the campsite and say hello!

Room Tip: bring earplugs and a sense of humor!

We stayed there as a group of four and it was fine untill the trains started coming the tracks were literally 10 feet away from our camper and all the lots were just as close and if you looking to get some rest at night you can forget about it the train horn and the train itself were extemely lound and it shook our whole camper and they never stopped coming! we did not sleep at all!! But i must say the staff was nice and the facility was pretty clean but the train will runin all of that for you we wont stay again!

We decided to take off on a long family weekend over Halloween and wanted to visit Busch Gardens and Colonial Williamsburg. Location wise, this was pretty good but that is where it stops. We had read about the train so we asked specifically about it when we made our reservations. The rep told my fiance' that he would put us as far away from it as posible and that it really was a slow track with not much traffic. He LIED! We got in Friday night about 8pm and by midnight, there were already SEVEN trains through! It continued overnight as well...and all weekend long! It is also close to a major intersection so the train must loudly and prominently blow his whistle every time! In addition to the train, by being "the farthest away from it as possible," that meant that we backed up to a major road with traffic day and night! It sounded like race cars flying by us. If that weren't bad enough, someone on a neighboring property was playing loud music where we heard thumping of drums and bass on a very regualr basis. Unfortunately, I got sick on Saturday so while my family was enjoying Colonial Williamsburg, I got to listen to all of this!! It was WAY not fun!

In addition, our first reaction when we pulled in was that they "packed 'em in like sardines!" Even my 15 year old noticed it! In the front section, there were several campers that literally had awnings touching their neighbors' awning or camper or weren't able to be fully extended because of the closeness. I'm all for getting to know thy neighbor but really??

I have no desire to ever stay there again! If you want sleep at night, you won't either. There has to be better out there than this one! Good luck!

I stayed here instead of a hotel to prepare for a wedding. It was great! Both cottages were spotless, and there were little touches that made me feel welcome. I had to prepare a meal for a large number of people, as well as get dressed in a gown, and the large, clean areas and fully equipped kitchen made it easy. Maintenance even stopped by because a light bulb was out, and they were there within 15 minutes!

There were plenty of pillows, and the bed was really comfortable. The train did come by, but I honestly didn't notice it after the first time. The staff was really friendly, and helped with whatever I needed. The owner even let me borrow his crockpot, because I forgot mine at home!

I would definitely stay here any time I'm in Williamsburg again. It's like staying at a hotel room with a kitchenette, but with much more room, and more privacy.
