Description: This high-energy bistro took over as Williamsburg's best restaurant as soon as it opened in 2003. The sophisticated but relaxed dining room has an open kitchen, which uses fresh, local ingredients for its creative American fare. The dining bar and seasonal outdoor patio seating are on a first come basis. Reservations for the dining room are recommended and may be made up to 2 months in advance. Open daily for dinner, a hostess is available during the day to take reservations.

This busy restaurant may be hard to get reservations at during busy weekends. We were lucky enough to find seats at the bar however. The bartender was fantastic. Not only did they have a great wine by the glass selection, but the bartender insisted you taste before you decided. Very generous. We first ordered the lobster salad and rabbit appetizers. The lobster salad was amazingly refreshing with a light touch of lemon olive oil. The rabbit was utter delight comfort food. It was pure buttery gravy goodness. We decided to try a couple other apps which were good but not amazing like the other two. Definately get the lobster salad or rabbit. Yummmmmmm! By the way, avoid the blood orange martini. Not that great. Everything else was outstanding.

The Fat Canary consistently has some of the best food in Williamsburg, They take advantage of what is fresh and carefully balance the preparation and flavors. Everything from seared ahi to lamb roast is put together with care. The waiters know the food and what wines go with what. I've been there often and never gotten steered wrong. The biggest issue for me is saving room for their wonderful desserts all made fresh daily. The service is attentive. The serving room is not very large and tends to be a bit elbow to elbow. Advance reservations are a must, often weeks in advance is required for tables at busy times. They do serve a good menu at the bar. Though not cheap for Williamsburg it costs much less than it would be in major cities and I'll match it against most anywhere in food quality.

My wife and I are regulars at the Fat Canary, so my views reflect lots of visits.

First, you can choose regular table seating, bar seating, or outdoor. Recently, we have become bar regulars. You cannot reserve this, but if you show up early on a weekday toward midweek, seating is usually easy to come by on a walk-in basis. The bar is a nice experience. The bar servers become your friends! And it's easy to socialize with others. You eat from the regular menu there. We tend to split a lot of dishes (more variety that way) and the restaurant is extraordinarily accommodating about this.

The food is inventive and playful, but always truly excellent. Certain items, like the "special" tuna tempura, are always available. Others change with the season. Last night we split the ginger pork rib appetizer, one of the salads, and the quail with goat cheese tamale for an entree. Yum.

The Fat Canary has a bistro atmosphere, so if you are averse to any noise you will have to get used to it or you won't much enjoy your visit.

This is one of my favorite Williamsburg treats. The food is great, and I like the location in Colonial Williamburg. It is a little pricey, but in a sense that is part of the experience.

Good food but I was expecting more choices. The place can be busy and loud. Certainly a place to hit if you are in Colonial Williamsburg.
