I had been to the original pottery, "back in the day". After reading other reviews, I wasn't expecting much at all - but went because there was a wine shop. Not saying that there are great bargains, but there IS Great variety! The gourmet shop and wine shop were my favorites. They were even offering tastings in the wine shop with helpful recommendations from the wine shop manager/buyer. 12% (mixed) case discount as well. The new building is clean, attractive and easy to get around in. Worth checking out.

Nothing special. I thought the place closed at 5 as it was so empty.

Here's a fun game. If you have a bar code scanner on your phone, scan random items to see the big mark up. Fun way to waste time in there.

I think I'll bring a Michaels add or use Amazon next time in in there since they match. Could be interesting.

Americana has been lost...

My wife and I are from Pa. and have been visiting the WP almost every year since the mid 80's. We usually come away with a carload of unique and interesting items many of which we didn't know we really needed. Our home is littered with things brought back, all of them with memories of the shopping experience from that year. It was always like a treasure hunt that we looked forward to each trip. The experience of walking the endless and dusty aisles was part of the fun, discovering lost and unique items that one would never find in a Walmart or an upscale foodie shoppe. After a few years away, we were terribly disappointed by the new look. Sure the outside is upscale, and the inside is clean and neat, but I can get that at Walmart, Target, Michaels, and a host of others. The product line is no different than the others. It is a shame that what is perceived by some as progress, is really the elimination of a historical past that can never be reclaimed. What if John D. Rockefeller hadn't thought of that in the 30's? There wouldn't be any reason to come to Williamsburg would there be? Too bad, long live the old Pottery in our memories.

Kadydew,
We are so pleased to have had your continued business for many years. As the market changes, develops, and grows, our small family business adapts to continue to offer the best variety and value that we can, and will continue to do so for years to come. And don't forget we still offer the very best Salt Glaze Pottery- still handmade, the same way, since 1938. If there was anything you could not locate during your recent visit, please feel free to contact us at comments@williamsburgpottery.com. We would be happy to get those items ordered for you!

My recent visit to the Williamsburg Pottery literally ruined my day. I am dying to know what led to the decimation of this iconic shopping destination. At the old WP I could spend a whole day treasure hunting and come away with a carload of finds. On my recent visit to the new WP I spent one hour, less than fifty dollars, and scored nothing I couldn’t have gotten at Walmart – probably cheaper. Is that the point? To discourage old customers in the hopes of attracting new? Why? Do we need another glitzy strip mall so badly that an authentic shopping experience must go?

Carolyn R,
Thank you for taking the time to write. We would like to address your concerns.
1. Q: "what led to the decimation of this iconic shopping destination"
A: While the old buildings were no longer safe for guests, founder J. Maloney's widow chose to realize his dream by building safe, clean, beautiful buildings to house a wide array of merchandise we have always offered at the best value.
2. Q: "Is that the point? To discourage old customers in the hopes of attracting new?"
A: Absolutely not! We want everyone to have a satisfying experience here as we value ALL of our customers, both those who have visited before, and first-time visitors. We will always listen to our guests and make improvements. Please feel free to let us know products you love for us to carry!
3. Q:"Why? Do we need another glitzy strip mall so badly that an authentic shopping experience must go?"
A: Can you clarify what you mean by "authentic shopping experience"? We shied away from a strip mall design and chose to realize Maloney's dream of a beautiful exterior that is pleasing to the eye, and has lots of room inside for a great shopping experience.
