Description: Gather ‘round at Chowning’s Tavern for hearty, Colonial-inspired pub fare, all served up in an authentic alehouse atmosphere. Try favorites of our founding fathers, including savory Shepherd’s Pye and satisfying trenchers served in bread bowls. Make friends with fellow diners over a frothy pint, or enjoy an ale outside in the beer garden. Want to take a piece of Colonial Williamsburg home with you? Order a local craft beer and keep the traditional salted mug. If you’re in need of a quick bite to fuel your day of exploration, stop by Chowning’s Garden Grill between 11am and 4pm daily for burgers, sausages, stew, BBQ, salads, and sweet treats.

We were here one evening in summer, the atmosphere of this place is worth going for alone, but the food was amazing. Staff was nice too and the wait wasn't too long, I'd recommend reservations in the height of the tourist season, when we were there (July 4th weekend)

This is one of our three favorite restaurants in CW (the others being King's Arms and Campbell's). The food is delicious, the service quick and friendly and the atmosphere just plain fun. One must have at least one meal here when in CW!

We make reservations every time we are in Williamsburg! They take walk ins but sometimes there is a wait! You can eat around back when the patio is open. On a nice day day that is wonderful however, The best experience is inside in the evening. The Ales and drinks are good. Typical to the time period and add to the Colonial experience. The ham is good but salty! The Liebotschäner Cream Ale and the pulled pork sandwich are the best treat any time of day! Wile you can't go wrong with any thing on the menu really. We've been a dozen times. It's a MUST If your visiting. The rum runners are great if your not a beer drinker. We've been here for early and late dinners, and many times lunch.

This was an awesome place for dinner. The staff play the roles of colonial tavern servers. The food was outstanding I had the lamb. The josiah beer is great. The one downfall is the uncomfortable seating. The chair I sat in was low to the ground and caused my knees to ache. If better chairs are added this place would be perfect.

It was a cold, windy day when we stopped in to Chowning's for a light lunch. The corn chowder and Brunswick stew were piping hot and tasty, as was the hot cider. Our shared dessert was excellent and the service was fast and friendly. Not as formal as the other taverns/inns, but still a good atmosphere, so perfect for a quick bite.
