The Colonies at Williamsburg Resort
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 15, 2012

We stayed at this resort on our recent trip to Williamsburg. Check in was quick and efficient. We did arrive late, around 7:00 PM, so there was not a big rush of people checking in at the time. The front desk clerk was friendly. Our room was right in the first court on the second floor. The stairway up to the second floor and the hallway had no air conditioning, so in summer, carrying up the luggage was very hot. The room was very clean and nicely decorated. Quality of furnishings is not the best, and as the resort gets older, will show wear and tear. The couch was very uncomfortable but the living room chairs were comfortable. Kitchen was well stocked and had everything we needed. The bedrooms were spacious and the beds were pretty comfortable. It would be nice if the second bedroom had two beds like most other timeshare resorts, instead of just the one. We noticed that housekeeping hadn't left any washcloths, so we called the front desk and they had them sent up right away. The second floor units have a washer/dryer within the unit, so you don't have to share. This is handy when traveling with kids. As other reviewers stated, there are only 6 towels in the room. After reading the reviews, we brought a few from home so we did not ask for extras.
The pools are very nice, although the indoor pool area is very heavily chlorinated so it has a very strong smell. There is a small game room with ping pong and a few arcade games. They had a few activities during the day, but not much, however we were at the parks and did not participate in any. There is a small playground and tennis courts as well. We were told that they are building a large indoor water park at this resort and it should be ready next year. That will be nice for winter months when Water Country USA is not open.
The guest services desk presented us with a "welcome package" (a bag with flyers in it, how exciting!). They also told us they would send us on a complimentary breakfast or lunch at a nearby restaurant (up to 6 people) and then ask us to participate in a 45 minute survey about the resort afterwards. In addition to the free lunch, they would give us a $75 gift card. So we did this and the lunch was very nice. The "survey", however, was really a sales pitch to buy the timeshare. We had no problem with this as it was expected since they were giving us gifts. However, it was longer than 45 minutes and the sales person and manager both had attitudes when we declined the offer.
Overall, the resort was very nice and I would definitely recommend it.

Our family of a married couple and daughters ages 10 and 6 had a wonderful week of fun and relaxation. The staff was friendly and always available. We used the pool several times with visits at different times of the day. There were often other families which our children played with allowing us time to relax in the large adult only "warm" tub. Although the tub was simply warm and not hot it was perfect for our July 4, 100 degree weather. On our last day the girls requested to just stay at our resort pool area instead of revisiting Busch Gardens or Water Country. We did stay at the resort the afternoon of July 4th and enjoyed their organized activities and prepared menu.
The location is convenient. We visited Busch Gardens, Water Country, Yorktown, and Colonial Williamsburg. Although visiting the area during a crowded and hot time of the year, our unit allowed us time to cool off and rest in a comfortable relaxing place. There are many stores and restuarants in the area. We preferred to eat at the parks while visiting them. We shopped the local grocery and ate breakfast and some other meals in our unit. We all were able to spread out and enjoy family time as well as private time in our lovely unit. The three flat screen TVs accomodated all. The roomy bathrooms and to die for shower in the master were great.
We had no complaints!! We loved it. We have stayed in Willimasburg at three other similar resorts. This will be my first pick in the future. A perfect place for family fun and relaxation.

Just stayed for a week - 2 adults and 4 children (ages 11 - 16) and we all had a wonderful time! The place is immaculate, quite spacious and fully equipped. We saw the pictures and expected it to be nice, but not THIS nice!
The service was great, the activities were fun for the kids who felt inclined to partake, and the pools were awesome!
The location is great - close to outlet shopping, easy access to main highways and a quick and easy ride to all of the historic locations, as well as to Busch Gardens and Water Country. If you plan to spend time at the parks, DEFINITELY get the vacation pass. It's fabulous because it allows you access in and out of the parks unlimited times throughout your 7 days and it pays for
itself on your second visit.
The kitchen was fully-equipped with all that you would need... There is even a grill outside your unit.
We used the washer and dryer that was shared between our unit and the neighbor's unit, but it was never an issue.
People have mentioned the on-site construction, but quite honestly, we heard nothing and were never distracted by any of it.
Although we enjoy travelling to new destinations, this is a place we would definitely consider returning to.

Just came from staying at the Williamsburg plantation which I hated!! And came to stay here one night..I am SOO impressed the rooms are beautiful, staff is much friendlier and the pools are wonderful. It is everything Williamsburg plantation lacked! I'm shocked these are sister resorts. Now get pass the construction and this place is definitely worthy of intervals gold start rate! My only problem is I'm upset I didnt book here originally! I will know better next time

I stayed in the completed part of the resort so I did not have any noise problems. The a/c was the quietest I have ever experienced in Williamsburg. I had a spacious 2 bedroom 2 bath unit with a balcony, fireplace, and 3 flat screen TVs. There is a free DVD exchange in the lobby. The unit was a nice open floor plan.

The outdoor pool was very family friendly with all kinds of slides and fun features. The indoor pool was more subdued. There was free wi-fi in the units and even a nice little desk to use my laptop. There were no restaurants or stores on site so bring your own necessities. The Premier Outlet Mall, which includes a Food Lion, is a mile away on Rt. 60.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the construction.

Strange layout. We thought they were conventional townhouses. But there are 4 apts in each section. 2 upstairs 2 downstairs. Parking is awful. Too many handicap places, never used. Not enough room per unit. We only had 1 car. We were rarely able to park outside our unit. There should be # places for each unit. Beds are VERY hard. Like a brick with a pillowtop cover. I never got a good nights rest! Nicely decorated. But not top quality. Edges of tables & chairs showing wear. Not sure they will stand up to the wear & tear of a timeshare. Customer Service great! Very friendly & helpful.

I was unsure what to expect with so many postings asking about the construction. I recommend you disregard these references. The reality is that this is a new resort that has been and will continue to be under construction for some time. None of the construction affected our stay. We were very, very impressed with the accommodations. We are owners at the Palm Springs Tennis Club and visited this location on an exchange. We had a two bedroom, two bath unit on the second floor. Our unit was well appointed, elegantly decorated and well stocked. Our unit had a washer/dryer which came in very handy. I learned about the Vacation Village sales schtick when we stayed at one of their places in Florida and knew to tell them to put us on the "do not call list". I'm very, very thankful that they respected my wishes and were very gracious when I made the request. This is a huge difference from their Weston, Fla location. I would stay here again without any hesitation and highly recommend it if you are looking for a place close to all the Williamsburg attractions. BTW, one of the locals told me that the Richmond airport is the best airport to use. Not having been to Williamsburg before we had a tough time figuring out which airport to pick, Newport News, Norfolk or Richmond. We went with Norfolk because it had the most flight options and made the 1.5 hour drive (in heavy traffic). If you fly in and out of Norfolk give yourself lots of time to get to and from because the beach bound traffic during the summer will slow you down. Finally, if you have a chance to visit their day spa (located at their sister property, the Williamsburg Plantation) make sure you do so. Kim provided a great hot stone massage.

Room Tip: They do not have elevators so if you have any special mobility needs or are traveling with small chi...
