“Wonderful!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 12, 2014 via mobile

We stayed here one night and had the most magical time! We stayed in the Moody kitchen and it was so picturesque. Granted, there were a few small issues but nothing that really detracted from our stay (shower drained extremely slowly, had to have the heat up high to keep it warm enough), and really with these old buildings one should probably not expect perfection. The bed was comfortable although a couple extra pillows would have been nice. A gentleman came and started a fire for us in the evening and that was truly lovely! All of the staff we encountered were kind and courteous. Shower was nice and hot, keurig coffee maker was nice to have, and we sat by the fire drinking some Williamsburg wine and reading all about the old Williamsburg and 18th century libations. It was a dream! Like going back 300 years. Would definitely stay here again.

We have been visiting Williamsburg for over forty years and have often stayed in the Williamsburg Inn properties. We are so disappointed in the decline of this famous, beautiful, and until now--in our minds--exemplary location. We spent two nights in the Brick House Tavern on Duke of Gloucester street. The room in nicely decorated in the colonial style. One of the bedside tables was so loose on its legs my husband nearly fell when he used the top and it flipped. He caught the lamp so it didn't break--first problem. Friday evening we discovered the shower didn't operate. We phoned to have someone come and turn off the water that kept running. Housekeeping couldn't get an answer in maintenance, so he came over and managed to pull on the shower control enough to get the water turned off. No shower Friday. We were assured someone would come Saturday to fix the shower. That would be "no." On Sunday, in spite of the water problem we took our showers and left it running as we were checking out anyway. Friday night I pulled a wash cloth from the abundant stack of linens on the towel rack and the entire rack fell apart. So we stacked the linens on the tub which wasn't an issue until Sunday because it didn't function anyway. There wasn't any place to put your things in the bathroom which was surprising because the WI has always been so thoughtful in the past. Upon checking out and telling them the water is running in the shower, we were told there had been an administrative error in coding our room so the included breakfast is on our final bill. Accommodations are not inexpensive at this property so this is not inconsequential. At first we were expected to pay for that error and if his manager agrees, they will refund us. We had a printout of our "confirmed reservations" and after some ugly conversation, the bill was finally adjusted. We were also told that maintenance had told them the plumbing was fixed. I expect old and quaint, but I do not expect non-functioning plumbing without so much as a gee, I'm sorry you were inconvenienced. I can overlook crooked walls, slight chipping of paint on the painted bathtub, small TVs, that kind of thing, but I can not excuse the opposite of the topnotch hospitality we had always expected from Williamsburg Inn. Terribly disappointed in the "manners" of the front desk. I don't think we will stay with them again.

Room Tip: If you stay in the restored or old properties, try the bathroom facilities, the TV, etc. before acce...

I used to visit Williamsburg often when my daughter was in college there and I usually picked a moderately priced motel. Sixteen years ago my wife and I stayed in the Peter Hays Kitchen, one of the Colonial Houses. Since then we have returned 3 times and each time we have chosen to stay in the Colonial Houses, twice in small houses and once in the Brick House Tavern which is right smack on Duke of Gloucester Street. These accommodations are furnished in the authentic period but still with all of the modern conveniences we have all come to expect. To stay in the very middle of Colonial Williamsburg delivers a totally different experience and one that has enhanced our visits. One big plus is that if you need to rest in the middle of the day your hotel is close by. Another plus is that parking is provided and for the most part you can park your car and leave it there for the duration of your visit. If you like Williamsburg and have never experienced the Colonial Houses you should consider staying in one.

We stayed in a Williamsburg Colonial house the week before Thanksgiving. House was located right next to Christina Campbell's Tavern. .

The House was clean and the staff was very friendly and helped us with a couple of minor issues with the house very quickly. The fireplace was great for the kids toasting marshmallows and warming up on the unseasonable cold weather (it was only like 25 during our entire stay)

The kids were scared to sleep alone on the second floor at first, however after the second night they were fine with it (heck I wish they would have let me sleep up there - it was a great room with good view of the capitol)

With our package we got free breakfast at the williamsburg inn. The food and service were great. We also took the Bits and Bridles tour and the kids loved seeing how all the animals were raised and cared for.

The only two minor issues we had were when we first moved in there was mold growing on the ceiling of the bathroom. We mentioned it to the front desk and they were out fixing it in minutes. The other issue we had was that the ghost tour we had booked for the daughter was changed from a walking tour to just a ghost story telling session in the basement of one of the taverns due to the cold weather. It was pretty lame, I just wish they would have cancelled it and let us attend another day.

All in all a great trip and I would love to go back!!

A number of weeks before our stay at the Cheswell-Bucktrout House, a reservation agent was kind enough to go over all of the rooms which were available. We decided on Room 3035, a large room upstairs in the house. When we checked in, this room was occupied -- with no excuse or reason given for this error. We were put in the smallest room in the house, Room 3031, that was extremely warm. On the second day of our stay, we had to be available to move to the beautiful room we had reserved for the last two nights of our visit. Our stay was delightful after the move. However, I feel it is important to mention the above because the reservation you make may not be honored. If I did not show my disappointment, we would have had to stay in the small, hot room. Also, we were told there would be internet service in this house. There is not. -- On a brighter note, the Williamsburg Colonial Village was beautiful during this Christmas season. The exhibits were very well done and the docents were outstanding.. The museums have grand shows which you can spend a lot of time enjoying, again with excellent docents.

Room Tip: Draw up the room plans of the Colonial House that you wish to stay in on the internet when making yo...

My fiancé and I decided to quietly just the two of us get married and we chose colonial williamsburg. Having been there before we liked the atmosphere and history of the area. By the time I booked the reservation there were only 2 colonial houses to choose from. I picked the 2nd floor of the lightfoot tenement, the layout of the room was spacious and comfortable. It is a one bedroom suite with a queen canopy bed (felt like a new mattress). there was a nice wet bar area with a keurig coffee maker and fridge. The living area is nicely furnished, 2 wing chairs a desk, sofa and TV inside a cabinet, and a fireplace that we had lit daily. There are windows all around this floor and it is brightly lit with some nice views of the gardens and magazine across the street. The weather was wet on our wedding day, so we were married in front of the fireplace. The rooms were very clean and had everything we needed, soaps, shampoo etc, and the hotel even left a bottle of champagne with a letter of congrats. There is also a extensive room service menu. All of the staff treated us like royalty and were quick to respond to request such as we need a fire lit, and can you arrange for a bridal bouquet, a bucket of ice and such. The breakfast at the inn is fantastic. we had the package so included was the buffet or order what you want off the menu. We are very happy we chose this particular house to stay and have our ceremony. We will be back for anniversaries in the future. I recommend commissioner Ron Saunders as a officiant, he is kind and sensitive and will take photos as well, the inn has a list of officiants they can email. Also while the inn is a great place to dine, we love Berrets restaurant, and return always when we are in the area, the owner even gave us a bottle of our favorite wine to take home when we picked up the whole peanut pie we ordered to take home and share with family! Its the best peanut pie. My only 2 complaints, the water temp in the shower can be a little tricky to get just right and the bus stop is across the street,it can be a little noisy being on a car traveled road and all.

If you have a desire to step back in time, this is the place. Obviously the restored city is a must visit but you should also consider staying in one of the colonial houses if you want to immerse yourself in the experience. Wide board floors, 4 poster beds with canopies antique-look furniture allows you to "get the feeling". Well equipped baths and modern convebiences, cleverly hidden, add to the comfort. Staying during the Christmas season is especially nice. Yes, it costs a bit more but it's worth it. We parked the car and never used it again for 3 days. Everything was within walking distance or the wonderful buses. I think kids would enjoy this too as they can just walk outside their colonial house and be part of the colonial city scene.
