We spent the last four days of August in the Brick House Shop in Colonial Williamsburg. My husband, my self and our 12 year old grandson loved it. It is a 2 floor, comfortable house right off Gloucester Street in the middle of the city. Drummers march by as do costumed townspeople. We had our own parking which made everything super convenient.
Our breakfast was a fabulous buffet in the Inn. We also had access to the pools, indoor and out.

Service at the Inn was impeccable and thee concierge could not have been more helpful.

The house, the city and the hotel were outstanding, as was the Pig Roast at Shields Tavern.
The performers were perfect and played directly to our grandson who was the only child there.

I can't wait to return!

I've read several reviews of the Colonial Houses both on this site and others. The ones who are dissatisfied, I believe, are that way because they don't quite understand what it means to stay in one of these homes. Having just returned from a stay and, having stayed in the Colonial Houses previously, I thought I would give an overall impression/review so people know what they are getting.

The Good:
Our latest stay was at the Chiswell-Bucktrout Kitchen. Cute, cute, cute! The CB Kitchen was nice and cool - there is air conditioning - had a small fridge, a nice-sized bath, and was beautifully decorated. There is also a wood-burning fireplace which would be lovely in season. It is very private and quiet. It is right on Francis Street so you do hear the occasional rumble of traffic, but not so much so as to be disturbing to us. It was an easy walk to anywhere in the historic area even though it is closer to the Capitol end of the street. It is behind Shields Tavern.

My sisters and I had a girl's weekend back in November and were housed at the Market Square Kitchen which is behind the Market Square Tavern. This was also a lovely home. The downstairs had a great canopied bed in front of a HUGE fireplace - which we did utilize! The downstairs bathroom is quite large. The upstairs had a separate bedroom with two twin beds and bath. The upstairs bathroom also was large, although the shower/tub is not for a tall person! Even though it was early November and cold outside, we were very snug in this home. It is more centrally located than the Chiswell-Bucktrout Kitchen. It is across the street from Chownings.

The Not-So-Good:
The electricity can be iffy at times in terms of working outlets, and there are not many outlets. I was surprised that there was no outlet at all in the bathroom of the Chiswell-Bucktrout Kitchen. However there was a large mirror on the back of the door and a surge protector where several things were plugged in, so I adjusted my morning routine to use that space instead of the bathroom. They had a roomy closet and a chest of drawers with 4 drawers of which only 1 1/2 would open. The rest acted like they needed waxing or maybe it was the humidity making them stick. I don't really remember any problems with the Market Square Kitchen other than the lack of outlets and being glad I am short when it came to the upstairs shower!

I would say the one thing I do wish they would change would be the mattresses in these homes. I don't recall the twin mattresses being terrible in the Market Square Kitchen, but the mattress in the CB Kitchen was just horrible. Very thin and hard. That is why I only award them 4 stars. Everything else is manageable.

There is also no WiFi in any of the Colonial Homes, but I have found that if you just HAVE to access the internet, sit in the parking lot of the Williamsburg Inn and you can pick it up there ; )

As with all of these homes, the thing to keep in mind is that you are paying for proximity to the historic area and for immersion in the "colonial" experience. These homes were probably restored/renovated in the 60's and not much has been done since then. It is also a "crap shoot" in terms of which home you will get with your reservation. You can request a home, but it is not a guarantee that you will receive that home. The sooner you can make your reservation, the better chance you may have in getting the requested home, but still no guarantee.

In conclusion, if you are thinking that you are going to get the Ritz for the cost of staying in one of these homes, you are not. What you are getting is a quaint slice of Williamsburg life where you can park your car and not have to move it again until you go home as well as impeccable service. I will say if a problem does occur, they are very quick to take care of it. Everyone is exceedingly friendly and kind. Sometimes all of that is worth a stiff back in the morning from the bad mattress ; )

If you're the type of person who finds Colonial Williamsburg charming - - what could be better than staying in an actual 18th century building! The various properties around the Historic Area owned by the Williamsburg Foundation can be rented for your stay. Up close and personal with history! Your room can be singles or doubles with sitting areas furnished with antiques! All air-conditioned and heated! Some of the rooms have fireplaces for the winter. You can walk to the taverns or the Inn or Lodge for meals - then, join a troop brigade, learn to march, chat up a tradesman or shop for the high quality items Colonial Williamsburg is famous for!

It was adorable, clean, fantastic location, accessible to everything in Colonial Williamsburg and The College of William and Mary. I would definitely stay here again and again. The home had air conditioning and a Keurig coffee maker too. The sitting room was not meant for comfort, but we had fun nonetheless. Loved it!!

We booked one of the Colonial houses to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. We could not be happier with our choice! We were in our own little building which had a canopy bed, sitting area, fireplace, bathroom, and refridgerator. Every window had a nice view of the surrounding historical area. It was quiet and within walking distance of the Colonial area. You check in at the Williamsburg Inn and the staff there was exceptional! We were recieved very warmly and escorted to our house. We even recieved a special treat delivered to our door in celebration of our special day. We will definitely be returning!

I loved staying in a small house a Colonial Williamsburg. We stayed in the Ewing Storehouse and really enjoyed it. The amount of room was perfect for 2 people. It included breakfast and admission to all the museums and houses. The spot was quiet and picturesque. The only negative was the water wasn't hot enough and sparse.

If you want to truly feel the colonial experience you'll want to stay right in town in an authentic Colonial building. The most unique benefit of staying in one of the houses is the ability to walk down the main street off hours as if you lived there. Walking the empty streets early in the morning as the period-dressed staff walk to work gives you an entirely different experience than you'd get mid-day. Once the ghost tours and dinner reservations are over and the day has cooled down there couldn't be a better time for a contemplative walk late in the evening.

We stayed in the kitchen house for the Market Street Tavern. In those days the kitchen was a separate building. The "room" was the entire building. One you would walk by and never suspect had guests in it. There is a queen bed downstairs and 2 twins up the narrow steep stairs to the second floor. The kids loved it. Not too worry if you are traveling in the summer, there was air conditioning.
