Woodlands Hotel & Suites - Colonial Williamsburg
Ranked #6 of 73 Hotels in Williamsburg
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 14, 2013

Williamsburg Woodlands is a hotel in the resort area of Colonial Williamsburg and could not be more convenient to all the attractions in Williamsburg. The visitor's center is right next door and the shuttle is a two minute walk from the lobby of the hotel. The room was smallish for our family of 4 but scrupulously clean and in excellent shape. The breakfast was ample and had many choices (waffle bar, eggs & sausage, fruit, cereal, etc.) but was all served on paper/styrofoam plates, which for me is a small personal pet peeve. The pool was well maintained and clean and had towels and a nice snack bar for guests. I would highly recommend this hotel for familie visiting Colonial Williamsburg.

Quaint and Quiet

First of all, if you are looking for "Hilton" amenities keep looking. If you are looking for peace and quiet look no further.
The Cascades is an annex of the Woodlands which is located on the Grounds of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation "compound". It's a small motor-court style motel that was built in the 1950's that is usually used for overflow when the Woodlands is full. It's located in a quiet wooded area on the back of the property.
Most of the rooms are "smaller" but not dinky. If you ask for a corner room you will get a larger room with a sitting area. Usually they assign the corner rooms first. And if you still need more room just book two rooms because most of them join together, and they are so wonderfully priced that getting two rooms won't be a stretch.
What the Cascades doesn't have: WiFi (a five minute walk to the nicely appointed lobby will solve this), refrigerators (if you ask for one they will bring one to your room), microwaves, coffee makers (again....five min walk to the lobby), Wall mounted hair dryers (Some folks apparently can't live without this).
Otherwise the rooms are super clean and decorated nicely. The customer service is fabulous and they are quick to remedy any problem you have. The only problem we had was that the washing machine ate our quarters but they refunded our $2.00 promptly.
Another awesome amenity was the FREE HOT breakfast!
Usually its not even worth milling around to wait in line for a free breakfast, but here the breakfast is in the conference center (five min walk) so it's large enough for hundreds of guests. They have several buffet lines and at least 6 employees refilling and sprucing up after guests so you never have to wait around for more coffee or more scrambled eggs. Another thing that impressed me.... FOUR WAFFLE IRONS! Not only were there four waffle irons.... There was FRESH whipped cream, blueberries, strawberries and chocolate syrup to put on your waffle.... Did I mention the FRESH WHIPPED CREAM?
Overall our $68 (w/AAA discount. $80 without) a night at the Cascades was the find of a century! We were getting ready to plunk down $120 a night at the Holiday Inn. The only way we knew about the Cascades was because we saw it on the way out after a stop at the Williamsburg Visitors Center. We decided to go in to the Woodlands to see if they had any rooms available here and we were glad we did because I had checked online for prices at the "official" Colonial Williamsburg hotels but the prices were much higher. So my suggestion, if you want to stay in any of the Williamsburg Foundation hotels, is to call (on the telephone) to reserve them. Because the prices online are 100% higher than if you call or physically go in.
One last thing... The little shampoos and soaps they have in the rooms are THE BEST! They are from "The Spa" at colonial Williamsburg and will rival any found at the Hilton or Four Seasons! Especially the soap, it was a lovely oatmeal "French milled" type of fancy soap.... Totally awesome!

Great location for Colonial Williamsburg and area attractions. Exceptional staff, clean hotel with everything handy we needed. Our stay included breakfast and tickets to Colonial Williamsburg which worked out great. Easy to get back and forth with shuttles and not have to take the car was a plus. We found the front desk staff to be fabulous. (Thank you Darin!!). Would definitely recommend this hotel - especially for families.

Stayed here while at a conference. Knowing the age of the facility and that it's not Colonial Williamsburg's top tier property, I expected decent accommodations but nothing more.
The grounds were well-kept and surprisingly quiet & peaceful. Colonial Williamsburg was a short and pleasant walk away. The visitor center was right there and buses were available there but I always walked.
The room was dated in size and layout but clean and comfortable. Electricity was out for over 24 hours during our stay but the staff worked hard to keep things going. Thank goodness the window on our third floor room opened to relieve the stuffiness of no AC. I wish I had known, however, that the TV was plugged into the one receiver that was on the generator. Not so much for the TV (though weather reports would have been interesting) but for the light.
Breakfast was large and thorough. The outdoor eating area was more peaceful than the dining area inside. Only on the weekend did the crowd of families make the breakfast area resemble an Orlando hotel.
The conference facilities were surprisingly nice! Overlooking a small waterfall and very peaceful. When the electricity went out, the staff bent over backwards to accommodate us---even transporting the group in vans to the Williamsburg Lodge (which had electricity) for our dinner and the events the next day.
The pool was nice and large though there is little shade.
I did not eat at the restaurant that is nearby (Huzzah?).

The Woodlands is a nice clean and safe place to stay. Your car stays in a lot you need your room key to enter. The suite was clean and cheery! The AC worked great! The only bad thing about this hotel is the beds are very uncomfortable!! I went 3 nights with no sleep at all. I kept waking up every 2 -3 hours in pain,or my hands or feet having pins and needles! I asked for extra pillows but they never came. :(
The pool is great! They do fun things for the kids like water balloons and water guns!
We never made breakfast but I heard mixed things about it. The location of the hotel is wonderful! They have busses to take you everywhere so you never have to drive.

Room Tip: The wifi does not work good At ALL so if you are on a business trip or something, I suggest you sta...

We spent 2 nights here over the 4th of July. Our room was clean and comfortable and convenient to the pool, which was great because of the hot weather. The continental breakfast has many choices, but it was a short walk down the road and very crowded. One of the best things about the Woodlands is its proximity to the Colonial Williamsburg visitor center and shuttle bus. We also liked the free refillable beverage mug and free evening event ticket for CW.
