Had a family reunion for the second year here - kids from New England on spring break. There will be more trips, probably in June & again next spring. This place goes into our family "memory treasure chest."
The entire staff here was welcoming, professional, helpful & kind. Our riverfront suite gave us an absolutely stunning view of the James. There was something to do for all of us - from ages 9-58! Safe for the teenagers, relaxing for all.
It's conveniently located to everything, although you will need a car. Jamestown, Yorktown are quick drives away. There are plenty of restaurants on site, and right outside of the resort.
Oh - the bed linens are amazing!

We stayed at Kingsmill just before Easter. This resort is just lovely. Accommodations are spread out through various luxury meets rustic buildings on the property. Most rooms (guest room through 3 bedroom floor plans) have some type of view -- either the James River or a golf course. Some rooms did back up to the tennis courts, which would probably be the least desirable view.

We booked a package from the resort's website that included our guest room, daily breakfast at Bray's Bistro, tickets to Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens for three consecutive days and complimentary greens fees after 2 pm.

Pros:

Beautiful room, magnificent grounds, great pool area/game room/exercise areas and complimentary transportation.

Nice playground for young children. 4 mile walking/jogging trail through bordering neighborhoods and the other properties on Kingsmill.

Three golf courses and many tennis courses on site.

We also enjoyed an impromptu picnic at the marina (the marina's grill was not open for business) and collecting shells on the small marina beach.

I did not use spa facilities, but other guests raved about them.

Cons:

Though we had a great stay, there were a few problems along the way:

1) Late check in. Though we requested an early check in, we didn't get into our room until almost 5:30 pm. When traveling with a toddler after a long drive, this can be a problem.

2) Room had a funky smell. I don't know if someone smoked in our non-smoking room, or if something (carpet?) got wet and started to mildew, but our room had a definite smell. We reported this odor to the front desk. After the next housekeeping visit, the smell lessened but never went away.

3) Dining. I agree with other reviewers. I observed most of the complaints/calls for the manager (and there were several loud requests) at Bray Bistro breakfast and Regatta's.

Bray Bistro was not staffed properly for the large volume during this busy week. However, once you were seated, the food was good and the atmosphere was calm and elegant.

This was not the case at Regatta's, the only really casual dining option open during this time of year. Regatta's was completely understaffed and reservations are not taken here.

Very long waits for tables (an hour was not uncommon) combined with staff literally running from table to table and constantly apologizing, a lack of silverware, lots of hungry kids, etc. added to the frenzied atmosphere. I didn't expect this at such a nice resort. I think if Kingsmill had adequate staff at this restaurant, many people would have left with such a positive review of a fun dining experience. Bottom line -- if you don't have kids in tow, don't eat at Regattas. There are two other fine dining options on site.

4) Shuttles. The complimentary shuttles were really great. However, they only ran one time/hour to Busch Gardens and one time every two hours to Colonial Williamsburg. More frequent shuttles may have helped ease anxieties of those waiting for breakfast.

If the only problems we ran into were a late room check in and infrequent shuttles, I would have given Kingsmill the highest rating.

Despite these cons (and I hope management addresses them -- at least the dining), I would stay here again and would invite others to join us. The place is beautiful, we were able to completely unwind and enjoy family time together.

ps -- Additional tip -- if you want to dine in one of Colonial Williamsburg's taverns, book VERY early.

We stayed at Kingsmill over Spring break, day after Easter through Friday, thinking that it would be very crowded. It was busy with people, but the resort is so big, that it did not seem overwhelming with visitors. We booked a one bedroom suite for our family of 4. The room was very clean, very modern, a well stocked kitchen, and a very nice bed. The staff are all very nice and helpful.
The shuttle is really a plus. We parked our car upon arriving Monday afternoon and didnot get back in it until checkout on Friday. We loved the shuttle to Busch Gardens and Colonial Williamsburg. The drivers give you tips on getting tickets and the attractions. Very helpful.
The dining is good, not excellent. The package we chose included daily breakfast buffet at the Bray Landing. Breakfast was very nice and the servers are very attentive.
We did not have lunch on the property, but dinner at the Regatta was okay, not a gourmet meal, but not disgusting either.
We splurged one night for Eagles. It was pricey, the steaks were good, but not the best.
Overall, the Kingsmill Resort is like country club living.
We loved the Spa, as did our two daughters, 9 and 6., On Wed eve they attended SpaKamp for girls which they thought was the best part of the trip! While the girls were there, my husband and I booked massages and then went to the bar for a drink!

We spent 3 nights at Kingsmill during April 3-6 with our two children, 8 & 11. This is a great facility with golf courses, pools, on-the-river immaculate grounds, passes to Busch Gardens, shuttle buses to attractions, and suite style rooms. The staff is very accomodating and seems to work very hard at providing top notch service.

The only problem is dining capacity. They are not set up for large numbers of visitors and don't have a mechanism set up to route guests around to a dining facility that might be less full. I speculate that the suite sytle rooms with kitchens buffers dining demand during the warmer months but that was not the case during our stay. Breakfast was a good example. Management had to know the number of guests coming for the period that were signed up for packages that included breakfast. But, the Bray Bistro was not set up to handle the crowd (although the hostess Allison did a remarkable job keeping the many groups waiting happy). Dinner reservations featured hour long plus waits. Finally, we gave up and went offsite.

I'd probably go back to Kingsmill because it is a terrific set up but I would check out the other options first.

We just came back from an excellent mini vacation at Kingsmill. We have previously been going to Wolf Lodge, but we were so tired of the place, we decided to come back to Kingsmill.

The room was beautiful and so well decorated and comfortable. It had a wonderful comfort bed and was so peaceful and quiet. the suite had lots of windows looking out onto the beautiful property.

There is so much to do here, the propery has a great sports center, a par 3 beautiful golf course on the river that is perect for family rounds. There are also 3 other courses on the property.

There is a full spa that I found to be wonderful in everyway.

There are many dining options on the property and the 2 we ate at were excellent. They also offer free shuttle transportation to Colonial williamsburg, busch Gardens, and water country.

We loved it here and refuse to stay anywhere else in Williamsburg again. This place is perfect for the picky who do not deal well with bad service. They go out of your way to make sure you are happy.

We made a last minute trip during Spring Break to Williamsburg (mostly to visit Busch Gardens) and booked here without knowing anything about it except its proximity to the theme park. What a wonderful surprise! This is a luxurious, sprawling golf and tennis resort sitting on the rolling banks of the James River - with a top notch spa, tennis and golf clubs, marina, fine dining, camp for kids and beautiful accomodations. From the moment you walk into the resort's main lodge, you are given white glove treatment. We had the smallest accomodation - a standard room. Standard rooms are the smallish rooms located on the sides of the large clusters of 2 or 3 bedroom condos. They overlook a wooded stream and feature spacious, newly done bathrooms. Loved Kingsmill and can't wait to return!

My boyfriend and I visited the Kingsmill Resort and Spa over President's Weekend (a belated Valentine's getaway) and overall had a wonderful time. We stayed in one of the standard king rooms with a view of the river. The view was BEAUTIFUL and there was also a small balcony with sitting area to further enjoy it. The room was great, the bed very comfortable and everything was spotlessly clean.

Upon our arrival on Friday we had no problems checking in and the front desk staff was very friendly and helpful. After reading reviews on this website we decided to try dinner at the Whaling Company (which is located right outside of the resort). It was fantastic! If you have a chance I would certainly try it out! Friday evening we visited Moody's Tavern for a few drinks and just a chance to relax -- this is on the property. Very cute little place with a sportsbar feel to it -- lots of seating and very friendly staff.

We did the typical tourist stuff on Saturday and had a great time -- went to Market Square and walked around a bit. We actually did go back to the room for a bit and ended up ordering room service -- not really impressed at all, the service was excellent and the food arrived quickly but the quality was very poor and overpriced not only for what we got but for taste alone. I would have preffered eating lunch at McDonalds.

Saturday evening we had planned on going to a restaurant in Colonial Williamsburg (the name escapes me) and when we called the front desk to ask for assistance with directions we did not recieve a very friendly response. We got the feeling we were bothering them and to top it all off they gave us incorrect directions! Long story short we ended up missing our reservation due to the poor directions and came back to Kinsmill planning on having dinner at Eagle's -- I would have preffered going back to the Whaling Company. Again from the prices I would have expected the food to be very good. It was only ok and the service was not so great. We waited about 20 minutes for someone to take our drink order and then when the food arrived we were dissapointed. When the dessert menu was dropped off we were asked "would we care to order anything 'to go'" ... to go? apparently our server wanted to close his section and we were preventing him from doing so -- either way did not think that was necessary. After dinner we went back to our room and settled in with a movie and a bottle of wine from room service -- a good end to the evening.

Sunday we were checking out and we headed to Eagle's again, this time for Breakfast -- much better! The service was great and the food was very good also -- we had a table looking out over the golf course -- great view and we even had a couple of snow flakes. I sent an email to kingsmill upon our return about the poor customer service we got on Saturday night and the wrong directions we receieved an almost immediate response and apology which was nice. We enjoyed it overall and would go back but would only have breakfast at the resort -- there are many other dining options in the area that are better (and more affordable).

Oh one other thing, the parking is a bit annoying ... the resort was fairly empty when we went and still parking was a bit of an issue saturday evening when we returned.
