Governor's Inn - Colonial Williamsburg
Ranked #35 of 73 Hotels in Williamsburg
Reviewed June 12, 2007

The Governor's Inn staff was extremely helpful and very nice. The rooms are typical for an econmical hotel--along the same line as a Days Inn or a Comfort Inn. Housekeeping kept us stocked with towels and all of the basics. The breakfast had a decent variety for continental but I do suggest planning ahead and getting there early due to the eating area becoming packed. There is an upstairs level but it was not always open. The pool is a nice size and was very well kept. Also the walk to CW is only about three blocks and we made it to the Governor's Palace within ten minutes. The walk is safe and not all that bad.

Over all, we felt this hotel met all of our needs and we will definitely consider staying here in the future. It is definitely budget friendly and is centrally located (Richmond Road is a short 5 minute drive from the hotel).

We stayed for 4 nights. Rate was very good, people were friendly and location is close to the Colonial area. (easy drive, bit far to walk).
Breakfast had a good spread. On busy days, the small room size made for crowding.
Rooms are comparable in size and furnishing to a super 8 level but clean.
As in other destination regions, you only use the room to sleep so size and amenities are not so important.
The large pool was a bonus.
We would stay again.
Very important----Request to stay away from the rail tracks.

This hotel is part of the Colonial Williamsburg group. We booked through their website and that worked fine.

The hotel is listed at the 'budget' end of CW's scale but looked fine and the website and this was indeed the case. The room we had was spacious, with two large, comfortable beds and a well-fitted bathroom. It was all clean and tidy. Check-in staff were very freindly and helpful.

The hotel is located on the northern edge of the historical district. It's about a 10-minute walk to Merchants' Square. The CW Visitor Centre is about a mile away, a drive of a couple of minutes. From there, if you wish, you can take CW shuttles tinto the historical area. Rersidence at CW hotels entitles you to discounts off Historical Area entry prices.

The hotel serves an excellent continental buffet breakfast. There is no internet terminal, but you have access to one at a sister hotel located next to the Visitor Centre; however, that involves a drive to get to.

The only problem I would mention is the proximity of a railway line. This runs along one of the hotel's boundaries and , whilst it is not a busy line, there is a considerable noise when a train does pass. Many rooms are affecterd by this, so try to get a room rermote from the railway line.

Otherwise, we thought this hotel provided excellent accommodation for our 3-night stay in Williamsburg. This is particularly so when the price of $69 per night is considered.

First this is a budget motel. For the package deal we got through Williamsburg $152/night I was expecting a little nicer place and a little cleaner. Next time I would stay 5 min away at the comfort Inn!

The train runs RIGHT by the bldg!! EVERY 3 hours during the night it rumbled by. If you stay here ask to be at the back of the property...maybe you won't hear the train. (it literaly shook the room!!)

Our bathroom was dirty (hair on the floor, I cleaned it with a towel) and a DIRTY towel hanging on the back of the door left from the previous guests. Room was clean by a budget standard (think ecno lodge or motel 6)

We had a connecting room with my in-laws. The ceiling above the shower had fallen into the BATHTUB! I was soooo embaressed I booked this vacation and the place was dumpy!

here's the good....
It has a good location and you can walk to the historic downtown and william and mary. It also had a free breakfast. The rooms were a good size and having the single pull out was a help because we have 3 kids.

for the price you can do better and 5 min is not a bad drive!!

This place is a great value with a convenient location. For the $69 rate we got a nice double queen room, the generous self-service breakfast, and discounts on CW visitor passes. Breakfast items include: bagels, muffins, donuts, pastries, oatmeal, grits, cereals, yogurts, boiled eggs, fruit cups, juices, coffee, tea.

My family stayed here in late October 2006. I booked our stay on the Colonial Williamsburg website. Later I read the reviews on this site and was somewhat concerned that I had possibly made a mistake in choosing this Inn. However, I was pleasantly surprised! Our accomodations were great, a wonderful value for the dollar. I would not hesitate to recommend this Inn to others, or to book another stay here if the occasion arose. The breakfast was one of the best we had on our two week trip to the east coast.

We had an excellent time in Wiliamsburg this past weekend for our 3rd anniversary! We stayed at the Governor's Inn mainly because of the location and price -- the price includes length-of-stay tickets to everything in Colonial Williamsburg. The hotel is totally equivalent to a Quality Inn. The staff at the hotel is exceptional -- very friendly, helpful and paid attention to the details! The free breakfast was HUGE -- definitely more than what we bargained for!

Even though it is the "budget" hotel out of all the Williamsburg-owned hotels, it maintains the high standards that we expect from a Williamsburg-owned hotel. We enjoyed all the little freebies in the room, too!

The hotel is about 3 blocks from Merchant's Square and within walking distance to the Governor's Palace and historic district! It was quicker for us to leave the car at the hotel and walk than to drive to the Visitor's Center and park/walk!

The only negative part about our trip was eating at Huzzah's -- which is a Williamsburg-owned restaurant (located at the Visitor's Center NOT at the hotel). The restaurant is advertised in the hotel and other Colonial Williamsburg brochures. But, it is soooo below par for Williamsburg. We waited 15 minutes for the waitress to even acknowledge us and over 20 minutes for the check. The service was extremely slow and unreal for a Williamsburg restuarant. The food was the best, but the lack of service ruined the meal.

Overall, we would definitely stay at the Governor's Inn again. It was very economical, in a quiet location, and perfect for what we needed!
