Owner description: Historic Jamestowne is the original site of the first permanent English settlement in America. Ongoing archaeology at the site of James Fort has changed our understanding of the struggles and triumphs of early 1600s life in Virginia. Living history programs and an archaeology museum tell the story of this dramatic rediscovery. The site is jointly administered by the National Park Service and Preservation Virginia.

“A great history lesson”

My son wanted to come here on our last day in Williamsburg. There are so many historic factors to choose from in this place. It is ran by the national park service and they do a fantastic job!

Be sure to visit the Preservation site. The restaurant has good sandwiches and soups. See the glass work operation, as well.

“The real deal.”

This is the archealogical digs for the first settlement for the English on North America. It is fascinating in that the real artifacts of the settlement are displayed and interpreted. This is not some Disneyland product but rather a National Park service run enterprise.

“Small, but interesting.”
Reviewed March 15, 2013 via mobile

Historic Jamesville was the last stop on our weekend excursion.

We had spent the majority of our time in Colonial Williamsburg and saw many reenactments, etc.

So when we stopped at the Jamesville visitors center/ settlement museum, we decided against paying for entrance as we had seen similar reenactments earlier in the weekend.

Instead we chose the Historic Jamesville Ruins. Great choice!

This is run by the National Parks and is small. $10 entrance for adults and that fee allows entry at the battlefields in Yorktown as well.

There is a small museum at the beginning. Then a short outdoor, wonderful walk through natural wetlands to the ruins. The ruins are active archaeological sites, when in season, but signage is there to explain some of the thing you cannot see.

Docents are on hand, too, for extra questions and explanation.

There is a small cafe inside the park, if needed for lunch.

The archaemuseum is the place that all archaeological finds have been saved and are on view. Interesting stuff: skeletons, pottery, tools, etc. this small museum really gives you insight on the ruins you had walked through.

Before you drive out of the park, stop by for a glass blowing explanation. Very cool for adults and children! The glass blowers do 4 year apprenticeships to qualify for these positions. Great skill, beautiful work and they will ship it home for you. We have an amazing ornament for the tree.

Jamestown is a must if you like ruins, native land, and less touristy reenactments. Plan on 3-4 hours on site.

I took the girls here to learn some history. These people really get into role playing and gave the girls some great history. We had a lot of fun and memories.
