Owner description: Historic Jamestowne is the original site of the first permanent English settlement in America. Ongoing archaeology at the site of James Fort has changed our understanding of the struggles and triumphs of early 1600s life in Virginia. Living history programs and an archaeology museum tell the story of this dramatic rediscovery. The site is jointly administered by the National Park Service and Preservation Virginia.

“Be sure to take the archeological tour!”
Reviewed October 5, 2012

Our guide, Mark, was terrific! He really made history come alive, and was enthusiastic about sharing the new discoveries in Jamestown and how they help us understand what life was like during the 1600s on the island. Even if you have visited before, you will enjoy your visit, as the past is being uncovered in front of you as the archeologists work. The museum is also excellent.
The glassblowing demonstration is free, and if you have a National Park pass, the rest of this wonderful area is as well.

“Where It All Began!!!”
Reviewed October 1, 2012

Historic Jamestowne is where it all began for what today is the United States of America! It was the location of the first permanent settlement in America in 1607. When you drive across the land bridge onto Jamestown Island, you are where the settlers first arrived. Much of the island retains the lush, natural setting found by the settlers in 1607.

Historic Jamestowne is truly an archaeological museum. You can view the foundations of many of the original buildings in the settlement. The church tower, which dates back to the 1680s, is the only aboveground seventeenth-century structure on the island. The brick Jamestown Memorial Church was built in 1907 for the tercentennial.

If you stand in the tower door of the church and look straight ahead, you will be looking at the site of James Fort, which is represented by a partial palisade erected above the archaeological footprint of the original 1607 fort.

Every Ameicna should visit the site of where it all began for us in 1607!
