I had made a decision to see some sites in the region, and this was one of them. It is a special site in many ways. Although it is ruined, it has great history. You have to see what they are doing. I took the hard hat tour, and Barbara was my tour guide. (She was better than excellent). You will want to see this place.

Menokin is a beautiful place and once well worth visiting. It is easy to see everything in 2 hours and great for kids 8+ to learn more about the history and evolution of building and architecture. A bonus is that you get to support a great living museum in a great part of Virginia.

This former home of Francis Lee is interpreted as the ruin it currently is -- and that's what makes it of special interest. Anyone interested in preservation or what happens BEFORE sites are totally reconstructed (this won't be) should visit. The visitor center has interesting artifacts you can actually TOUCH of the original wood work and a friendly, knowledgeable staff, including mascot Sadie. Bravo to their plans for the future. We can wait to see the glass covering bring it even further to life.

Really, really interesting place. A well-protected and interpreted ruin of the 18th century home of Frances Lightfoot Lee. Somehow the ruin ("rubble with a cause") seems all the more interesting for being incomplete/damaged. Also loved seeing the woodwork, mantles, doors, etc. safely stored away from the house. Have Leslie Rennolds lead your tour if you possibly can. She's not only informed but funny--and a great champion of the place.
