We had the Trout and Salmon. Outstanding! Service was very attentive. Be sure to go downstairs and check out the wine cellar.

We ate dinner and brunch at the Waterwheel over the Labor Day weekend and it was fantastic. The food was some of the best we have ever eaten and the service was on point. I accidentally dropped a $100 bill at brunch on Sunday morning and the staff returned the money to me the same night when they realized I was the one who dropped it....that's integrity for you! The value here far outshines the food at the Homestead. It's not cheap but I can almost guarantee you'll pay less here and get more for your money. You won't regret eating here.

Our first visit to the restaurant was a year ago during a visit to the Homestead. It was our favorite restaurant in 2012. A return visit this week, this time with another couple, just confirmed that this is a great place. The food, service and ambience was better than we remembered! A lovely small salad, encased in a cucumber was included with each meal. Our appetizers, trout, onion soup and the tomato soup were fresh and a beautiful mix of flavors. I had the filet mignon and my companions the eggplant and trout. All again were cooked perfectly. The maple cake desserts, rice pudding and creme brulee were a wonderful end to this fabulous meal. I forgot to mention that my Martini was nice and cold, the service was fabulous and the prices reasonable for the quality of the food!
This chef puts his love into his product. Well Done!!! I ate at a well known restauruant in NYC last week and it didn't come close to The Waterwheel.

this restaurant is in an old grist mill about 5 miles from the homestead resort. inside, the atmosphere is elegant, rustic, and romantic with whitewashed walls and beam ceiling. there is great wine selection, but there is no wine list. instead, you walk downstairs into the wine cellar, where displayed along the walls and around the gears of the old water wheel is a wonderful selection of local and national/international wines. pick what looks good and carry it back upstairs- what fun! (we chose a 2007 octagon from charlottesville winery barboursville and it is showing incredibly right now).

our entrees were mountain trout and beef tips with local chantrelle mushrooms over homemade pasta. both excellent. the salads were artfully presented. the deserts (the best bread pudding i have ever had, and i get it whenever and wherever i can) and maple spice cake were excellent.

the owner and his wife have formerly had positions of significant responsibility at the nearby homestead resort and also at the greenbriar. they know what they're doing, and they clearly enjoy it.

if you have ever lived or visited in and around charlottesville in the central virginia region, you know how this area has a way of hiding these treasures in the small hamlets in the hills and mountains. anywhere else, you'd have no reason to expect anything like this in a little one-stoplight town, but this is central virginia and there is magic here, and the waterwheel restaurant is no exception.

The food was great, as was our waitress. We too were underwhelmed by menu choices at the Homestead, so ate dinner our second night at the Waterwheel. A cozy, venue, full of character as the interior of an old working mill.
