When getting ready to stay in VA Beach, I compared a lot of properties thanks to Trip Advisor. We'd stayed at another property last year, and our organization had room blocks at two other properties, but my group of 5 families decided to try the Marjac. We were not disappointed! The rooms were much bigger than at other places, and the hotel was clean.

We did have an issue with the shower in our room, but I let the front desk know about it, and they sent someone up later that day to fix it. Yes, this is an older property, but the carpet and furnishings were in nice condition.

Pros: Location: oceanfront, and convenient to the convention center. Management was helpful in placing our rooms next to each other, even though we all arrived at different times.
Cons: Coffeemaker in the room, but no coffee or filters provided. Street noise in the room, but not sure how that could be remedied. It's just the neighborhood. Not too bad when we were there, but it was very early in the season. Only one car parking per room, and no flexibility on that.

This trip was our first to Virginia Beach, the weather wasn't the best but that is what to expect for April. The hotel had already turned the air on since they thought it was over the cold weather and so the first night there it was cold and we were told to turn our oven on . But the next day we said something about it being so cold in our room and they told us they had turned the heat back on and a maintance (sp) guy came and made sure that our room was warm . The view from our room was great. for the price we were happy.

It was terrible. I had to pay big money for a one day stay with no heat in a freezing room. They had me turn on the oven and stove which is dangerous for my two kids and also stinks. There was no authority or manager that could do anything about it.

This hotel is old and needs major renovations. When the air conditioner was loud and making funny noises, or when you we kept complaining because the bathroom drain, or the sink, or even the toilet was continually blocked; it was the same story, "I will send someone to take a look".

I believe someone did come to take a look... that was once maybe twice... and as soon as that person left the problem returned.

The only time we saw the manager/owner smile was when we were handing him the money. Otherwise his face was more like, don't bother me!

Room Tip: Go to another hotel where you are appreciated as a customer

The good: The staff was friendly, polite and helpful; the hotel is beachfront.

The Not-so-good: Parking is tight and limited but that is the case all over Virginia Beach. Our first experience in this place was to get stuck in the elevator for 20 minutes right after we checked in. It was hot and uncomfortable. There is only one small capacity elevator for the whole place and it was very slow. After that, we took the stairs the rest of the week. To be honest, there is a sign posted with the maximum elevator capacity (I think it is 5 people). Do yourself a favor and keep it to 4 people and 3 if they have luggage.

This is an old building in need of upgrades and renovation. Furniture is outdated and cheap.
Our suite didn't look very clean - carpet was creepy and the hard floors looked like they needed mopping so we kept our shoes on the whole time. Bed sheets were thin and so dingy, I felt compelled to wash them before we slept. Then there were the bugs. Just keep your suitcase zipped up!

The lamps had low watt light bulbs so we couldn't see inside the closet. It also made it impossible to read in the bedroom and also contributed the overall drab look of the suite.

Although the balcony overlooked the beach, the air conditioner equipment below was so loud that we couldn't sit out there and have a conversation without shouting at each other let alone enjoy the sound of the ocean waves. We kept the sliding door closed the whole time to avoid the noise -what a waste of beachfront property!

Bottom line, we won’t stay there again.

Room Tip: Book it at another hotel.
