Owner description: Preservation Virginia acquired the Cape Henry Lighthouse in 1930 when Congress deeded the house and 1.77 Acres of land to the organization in order to preserve it and make it accessible to the public. Over the years lighthouse and its surroundings have been restored including repairing the lantern after damage from Hurricane Barbara in 1953, repairing the damaged original Aquia sandstone and restoring the surrounding dunes. Today, visitors to the Cape Henry Lighthouse can climb to the top of the tower to enjoy spectacular views of the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean.

“History here”

Iam still amazed about the history of this lighthouse! It was worth going through the Army car inspection. WARNING - you need ID to go through, as we got send back to the hotel to get my (a passenger) drivers license. Our family was greeted by John, the Lighthouse keeper. He was extremely friendly and my kids took a liking to him. The view from the top of this lighthouse is very nice. The history plaques were super!

“Beautiful Light House, did not feel very welcome here.”
Reviewed June 25, 2006

This is a nice a very nice historic light house. Very nice views from the top, has one of the nicer gift shops then some of the other light houses we have been to. The only negative thing to say about our visit here was the vehicle inspection they must do here because your entering a military base, which is all fine beacause it has to be done. The inspection officer was very rude to us to the point where I felt like turning the car around and just leave without seeing the light house, but I didnt because we had already make it this far and I knew my wife really wanted to see the light house.
