Owner description: Preservation Virginia acquired the Cape Henry Lighthouse in 1930 when Congress deeded the house and 1.77 Acres of land to the organization in order to preserve it and make it accessible to the public. Over the years lighthouse and its surroundings have been restored including repairing the lantern after damage from Hurricane Barbara in 1953, repairing the damaged original Aquia sandstone and restoring the surrounding dunes. Today, visitors to the Cape Henry Lighthouse can climb to the top of the tower to enjoy spectacular views of the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean.

“Definitely Should See This on Your VB Vacation”
Reviewed October 28, 2013

I have been to this place twice now since moving to the area. It was great both times. The staff are very nice and its a minimum donation to get into the light house. It is definitely worth it. The view is great once you make it to the top. However, I will say it's not for the faint of heart! You have to climb A LOT of stairs to make it to the top and if you're afraid of heights, probably not the best idea. Other than that, the only thing that is a hassle is the checkpoint into the area because it's on a military base, but this is understandable and the guys are usually friendly.

“Must See Attraction!!”
Reviewed October 26, 2013

This is a very interesting and historical site to see. There is an onsite gift shop and small fee to enter the lighthouse ($5). All proceeds go towards the renovation and upkeep of the grounds. You will definitely get your exercise for the day climbing the almost 200 stairs to the top. Not a bad little climb and easy for just about anyone. Make sure you have your DL, Current vehicle ins card, and current registration, as you will need to present it at the gate. Remember you are actually entering a U.S. Military Base to see this attraction.

“Long Weekend in Virginia Beach”
Reviewed October 23, 2013

My husband and I spent a very pleasant, long weekend in Virginia Beach a few weeks ago. We decided to take an afternoon and visit the Cape Henry Lighthouse. We'd driven past it in previous years, but this was our first visit. The lighthouse is on a military base, so be sure to do your homework first, but it is worth the effort. Its very interesting and you can climb all the way to the top for a lovely view of the ocean. There are lots of stairs, so wear comfortable shoes!

“Worth the stop and $5 to help the preservation of history.”
Reviewed October 19, 2013

Be prepared for two checkpoints and a car search, and have all personal and auto credentials at the ready. The lighthouse itself isn't impressive as lighthouses go, nor was it as demanding to climb up to as many others. Interesting to be looking at the new light as you visit the old. Up top photo ops are challenged by scratched and/or wet glass. It's also about ten degrees warmer at the top with the sun blazing in through the light panels so in summer, cloudy day might offer more comfortable climbing. The base pass is good for 4 hours but to see just the light doesn't even take an hour if you're fit and able bodied. Porta potty is only restroom option I saw, so I don't recommend the climb on a full tank ;)

“Beautiful”
Reviewed October 15, 2013

Getting on the premises took a little while, since it's on a military base. You need to show driver's license, proof of insurance, and car registration. They also can search your vehicle, which they did. It was fine... just took some time.
One look at that beautiful lighthouse, and it was worth the wait. Actually, there are two - the old Cape Henry and the newer one. You can climb the steps in the old one, but not the newer one.
