“A great early-18th-century house!”
Review of Lynnhaven House

Attraction details
Owner description: The Lynnhaven House is a fine example of early Virginia vernacular architecture. It reflects the social and economic status of Francis Thelaball, a middling plantation owner who built it for his family. Architectural and design details including brick jack arches, a closed-spindle staircase with teardrop pendant, and ship's lap floor construction reveal a builder concerned with quality as well as artistry. Today the Lynnhaven House is furnished as a historic house museum to interpret the period Francis Thelaball and his family lived there, from 1725 to 1727. Guided tours discuss the roles of the household members--Francis, his wife Abigail, their five sons, an apprentice, and several enslaved people--as well as the Tidewater world of the early 18th century.

“A great early-18th-century house!”

If you are a history buff and are in Virginia Beach, this is a must see site. I've been going there since 1984 and love how it has grown with an educational and visitors center and outside oven.

“Interesting Tour”
Reviewed May 20, 2012

The tour of this house built in the 1700's was interesting. We learned a lot about the architecture, building nethods, and lifestyle. You can get a combination ticket to see two other old homes. Well worth the time if you like history.

“Awesome”
Reviewed October 18, 2011

This house was one of the highlights of our ten day east coast visit. Being from the west coast, just seeing a house this old was impressive. My husband and I had a wonderful guided tour of the house for only $9 total. It was fascinating to learn of the history. I was almost moved to tears when we toured the inside, realizing a family had actually called this their home. The interesting building details were amazing. I highly recommend you take the time to visit this marvelous home.
