“Wine with Dinner?”
Reviewed January 4, 2014

Zoes is a local's favorite that is tucked about seven blocks off the oceanfront and has that cozy , comfortable, warm atmosphere that takes your stress level down a couple of notches. The combination of great food and great wine keep the locals coming back, so make reservations. Chef Jerry creates a varied menu that changes to keep up with the seasons but is always excellent with lots of favorites. I have to admit, I've been here several times before. Try the Chinatown Shrimp Tempura. On this trip, we had a light dinner including a large iceberg salad which we split, the pan roasted rockfish and duck leg. The rockfish was wrapped in bacon which added just a touch of extra flavor to the dish and I could have eaten an entire plate of the truffle scalloped potatoes, which was just a small side to the rockfish. The duck leg was served as a smaller dish and was tender and flavorful, just enough. The Appla Crumbla with it's rum raisins and ice cream was the topper.
The wine selection at Zoes is one of the best in Virginia Beach. Sommelier, Marc Sauter knows his stuff and provides great pairings with dishes, will have excellent recommendations or will have your favorite bottle. Marc and Jerry make a great combination that creates a dining event. We took a few minutes to talk with the Scottish born bar tender who has an excellent knowledge of scotches and will even be having tasting classes. The entire service staff is friendly and very attentive making the entire experience well worth the trip. Treat yourself to this one on a regular basis.

“Hoped for SO much more”
Reviewed January 3, 2014 via mobile

We went to Zoe's for our anniversary dinner. Because it was a special night, we were willing to splurge a bit. Although we love Terrapin, we thought we'd try something new. The setting of the restaurant was very nice. Cozy bar and nice booths for dinner.

Started with the lobster pops and ugh....terrible. Couldn't taste lobster over the bacon and all that soggy breading. We then each did a 3 course tasting. Portions were smaller but we knew that going in. Still left full. Both salads were great. Our next courses were specials and they were nice too. Lobster and crab based. We ended with steaks which was the main reason for coming. My husband got the cowboy steak which was incredibly thin and over cooked. My filet was much better but not outstanding. We're from the Midwest so maybe our standards are just higher for meat.

Our server was friendly but was in and out so fast that we didn't feel like it was anything above average.

Would we come here again? If friends asked for it. Otherwise we'll head back to Terrapin. If you go, you'll likely have a nice time. Just don't expect to be wow'd.

Posting a late review.. Visited twice, once in April 2012 for my birthday and once in April 2013 for a wedding dinner. Both visits were absolutely amazing from the service to the food. Personally this is my favorite restaurant to enjoy a steak dinner.

The only downside is the mandatory valet parking. I don't like other people driving my car but they say the parking lot is to small and can get to crowded for customers to park themselves. Hmmm..

Will definitely continue to visit every year!

“Chef has no idea what tempura means”
Reviewed November 1, 2013

My husband and I had dinner last night at this nice restaurant.
We are not the chain restaurant customer type, so we were happy to have this place for dinner although it seemed a little bit uncomfortable to have the staff passing by our table so constantly; we think that because we are foreigners we were perhaps an exception with a different accent that they are not used to.
In any case, let's go to the food:
We had de edema me hummus with vegetables. First time we, hummus lovers, had this kind of hummus. It was ok, just ok, lacking. Flavor, plus the portion of vegetables was way to big for the serving of hummus. We finish the hummus when there were 2/3 of the vegetables sill on the tray.
Then I had a salad, good but not great, this one had some grapes that made it more interesting.
My husband had a spinach and tomato salad that was fine.
Then he had rabbit, a favorite dish for him, and he was very pleased with the way it was cooked.
I, on the other hand, had what was supposed to be tempura shrimp, but what I got was greasy breaded fried shrimp, nothing to resemble tempura at all. Tempura is a very special batter that was not what the chef used for my shrimp; also tempura food is fried at very high temperature and then the food is not greasy and soggy as these shrimp were. I ate a few of them and could not eat the rest.
The creme brûlée was well done, although the menu said it was topped with berries, which is the traditional topping for this French sweet, and to our surprise the topping was thin spaces of green apple (?)

The wine, a Malbec, was on the weak side and the sizing of the serving was ridiculous small.

The two espressos were served before the creme brulee, it should had breen the other way around.

In general, an ok experience but not particularly impressed in general.

Not a second visit in the horizon for us.

“Fantastic service from Valet to Dessert”
Reviewed October 29, 2013

We were celebrating our anniversary and arrived to a nice welcome. We were seated immediately (strongly recommend reservations) and our waitress wasted no time greeting us and answering our questions about the menu in full detail. They have a "tasting menu" where you can have the sommelier pair a different wine to the food selections of your choice. Our waitress was very attentive throughout the evening, even giving us a heads up about their "Zoe's Cup of Hot Chocolate" dessert which takes any where from 10-20 minutes to prepare (depending on which size you choose) which is good reason to give you time to think and decide before you actually finish your meal. We started w/ their shrimp appetizer, and then had one of the steaks and the mahi-mahi main courses and shared a side of the Blue Crab mac-n-cheese - all were excellent. We shared the small Cup of Hot Chocolate which was rich and wonderful! When we left to get our car, the valet was coming back from parking a car, recognized us and called out our car model and color to confirm it was correct before running off to get it. After being in the restaurant for over 2 hours and many people coming and going, kind of impressed he remembered us and our car. Highly recommend Zoe's if you're looking for good, attentive service a good meal and pleasant atmosphere.
