Atmosphere is what it's all about here. A little seafood joint with a great bar and great attitude is just what we were looking for. We dropped in for some apps and during a break from music on the beach. The restaurant was packed, but the hostess directed us to a little L-shaped shelf with stools next to the bar. Don the bartender and his excellent associate who's name we cannot recall, always a good sign, took very good care of us. The room is a little dark and broken up into different seating areas. Lots of dark wood and cool jazz on the sound system. The food, what little we had, was quite tasty. The tuna and crab special app was the highlight of the meal. Flounder in a bag with crab and shrimp stuffing was also very good. We returned later in the evening for a nightcap and enjoyed well crafted and poured cocktails. We will definitely return.

One of our new all time favorite restaurants. We loved the charm of the classic beach cottage- a rare find among the skyscrapers of Va Beach. The food was outstanding. Crab nachos were loaded with fresh crab and fresh, delicious tomatoes. Oysters Rockefeller were fresh and delicious. Crab cakes come with a tasty twist on traditional tartar sauce- granny smith apple. The scallops were tender over a savory, buttery puff pastry. Potato chip encrusted Mahi is a flavor sensation. Wine list was good and you can cork an unfinished bottle for take out! Wish we had room for dessert. The service was really attentive - water glasses constantly filled. We had a surfer dude type waiter who was awesome and just added to the chill beachy feel of the place. A tip though- there is always a long wait here. First night it was a 2 hour wait so we came back the next night 10 mins before they opened for dinner and there were already about 30 people in line. We just got in for first sitting. Despite the onslaught of customers, we thought they did a food job of pacing our dinner courses. We were there about 2 hours but the setting on the front porch was so pleasant we enjoyed every minute of it. Ps- free parking in back! Cant wait to return.

We are frequent visitors to VA beach and this is our forth trip to Tautogs in recent years. Our first trip was great but recent visits were not so good but we decided to go back again anyway just because there's not much choice of decent restaurants in the area. The fish on the menu is always good, no complaints at all, but the sides are just so bland and unappealing. They haven't changed since I started visiting, you get either rice pilaf (very bland) or potatoes (flavorless too) with EVERY dish. If you want a vegetable you have to pay and extra $2.50 for broccoli. But like I said, the fish is good. I had the tuna which was caught fresh off the coast of VA and my wife had the scallops which were awesome.

This place gets very crowded so be prepared to wait for a table during the busy hours.

Thank you Megan, the front desk clerk at the Holiday Inn Express in VA Beach for recommending Tautogs Restaurant. My husband and I split cerviche for an appetizer; tuna sashimi for the entrée; and finished with their key lime pie for dessert. In between, we also ordered 2 beers. Everything was fresh, delicious, with generous portions, and nicely presented. Our waiter was very knowledgeable, friendly, we were not rushed whatsoever. When in VA Beach THIS is THE place to go for THE best seafood. The old adage, "you get what you pay for" is true, but we did not find Tautogs overpriced for the quality, variety, taste, and service. Only one recommendation ... CHANGE NOTHING!

Food is good, atmosphere is quaint and unique. Would visit again; however, service was less than desirable.
