“The venue is better and the food is as good as it always was”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 30, 2012

I had my reservations about "tmother" moving to a new venue but the new space is very nice, the sound system is terrific (DO go see a show there, they get great bands) and the food is just as good, if not better (except the nacho's, they are terrible). Love the breakfast, the soups, the sandwiches and they make a great burger. We like to get a group of friends together and grab dinner with one of their shows...if you sit in the back you can enjoy the music and still talk to each other.

“Longing for the Old Days”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 16, 2012

Growing up in The Hampton Roads area back in the 70's & 80's was an exciting time for live music. One of the places to see old timers, like Johnny Winters, or up and comers, like Bruce Hornsby, was the hole in the wall club called The Jewish Mother. Located on Atlantic Ave, it was a place where one would stop for breakfast after partying all night at the Ocean Front. It was characterized by a small stage and the ability to use crayons to write on the walls, with management's blessing. It reminded me of a 50's style jazz club. But, thanks to the City of Virginia Beach, the old venue has been moved to a new spot close to First Colonial Ave & Virginia Beach Blvd.
If you want to hear great live music, "Mother" is still the place to go. It's a much larger place, with a patio for a nice cigar at night. The delivery menu is OK, but for delivering food, RT 58 is still the place to go. The breakfast is still great (my favorite is the Miriam's Miracle). The service is spotty and the seating arrangements are a mystery. This is a much larger venue to the old place, but the hostess squeezes patrons together in an otherwise empty establishment.
If you want live music and breakfast, The Jewish Mother is great, but for anything else, there are better options in Virginia Beach.

“Feel like an outcast.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 15, 2012

It has been a long time since I have been to the Jewish Mother. I arrive to the restaurant by myself, and was seated in a ares that felt like a little cafe than a restaurant. So at this 2 foot by 2 foot table. Was this really how you show guests in your restaurant that are by them selves. But the food is good. Not great and over priced. Service was very nice. So another words I will not be going back.

“Great service, good beer selection & a great sandwich”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 14, 2012 via mobile

Overall a great place for a relaxed meal at Hilltop. Much bigger on the inside than I expected based on the looks of the exterior. Kind and quick service, good menu selection, great beer selection on tap. Bathrooms were clean and well-kept. Smoked turkey Reuben was very good--not over the top or greasy but very filling; however, the fries were subpar--obviously of the frozen/battered variety, looking forward to trying a breakfast there soon--omelet menu looked enticing.

“Big Disappointment”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 6, 2012

I hadn't been to the Jewish Mother in years. It has moved from the Pacific Ave. location to an area near a strip mall.
The food was overpriced and VERY disappointing. The corned beef/pastrami was chewy. The fries were frozen. The black bean burger was mushy. I can see that the venue is great for music, drinking but left a lot to be desired as a lunch spot. It is warehouse sized with 2 bars and even though there were other dinners, it was seemed very empty.
Overall very sad to see the decline!!
