Virginia Beach has the longest boardwalk on the East Coast. Myrtle Beach's is wooden but it's only a like 8 blocks long and not very appealing in my opinion.
Be sure to enjoy the scenery but beware in the summertime it is very crowded and don't be surprised if people bump into you, etc.
Also great outdoors cafes and restaurants are along the boardwalk.
Hotels are numerous with cheaper rates in the winter when you can get an oceanfront from for $45 and up and it's nice and quiet but there is not much going on in the wintertime but it's still fun and very peaceful.
