Stayed for 3 nights on a short family vacation in 2-room corner suite on 8th floor. We're longstanding Marriott rapid rewards members, and have stayed at some of the best Marriott establishments in the U.S.A.

Here's an honest yet constructive review of Courtyard by Marriott Virginia Beach Oceanfront / N 37th St. Other than the location don't expect much value for the price.

Pros:
a. quiet, less congested end of beach;
b. full view of ocean front from living room/dining area, partial view from side bedroom window;
c. average cleanliness in lobby, hallways, exercise room, and suite;
d. front desk staff and cleaning staff average;
e. decent exercise room and pool area.

Cons:
a. parking $7 per day whether or not you park yourself in lot across the street or use valet service (think valet is higher cost);
b. no complimentary breakfast (explained we were rapid reward members; front desk staff curtly stated that we needed to book a certain way, "green something" in order to receive free breakfast) let alone coffee or newspaper;
c. extremely poor planning to have 11 floors/100 rooms/60 suites yet only 2 elevators where frequently 1 of the 2 was typically held at a higher floor leaving the rest of us to wait; if we were on say 4th floor, no big deal, we'd simply take the stairs; booked on 8th floor typically with beach amenities in tow not so easy;
d. have stayed at other hotels on the North end of the beach front, during the summer season, paid less, and received more value for the cost.

Summary: would we stay here again? no, never, unless it's for a deep discount or free!!!

Thank you for your reviewing of our hotel. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed the layout of our larger oceanfront suite. The north end of the oceanfront is less congested and quiet. We have a $7 daily parking fee, and also offer valet at no extra charge. Also, when booking a reservation there are sometimes a stay for breakfast rate that is available, which would include breakfast for your stay. I am so sorry your stay with us was not as expected. We do hope that your previous stay did not deter you from visiting us again in the future. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any more questions or concerns. Thank you again for your helpful feedback.

The hotel is in an excellent location at the quieter end of the boardwalk. We stayed in a 2 room suite on the top floor which had great views of the ocean, beach and boardwalk. The hotel was well kept on the outside and looked like a nice Courtyard Marriott, but while in the hotel, it felt like we were staying in some typical beachfront hotel. There was nothing special about it that made us feel like we were staying in a Marriott hotel, nor did it live up to expectations I have of the Marriott brand.
Upon checking in, we found the mini fridge not working and had to call 2 times in the first two days of our stay to have it looked at. The adjustment knob dial was missing and the first maintenance man who came to check did something but made it worse. The second maintenance man adjusted it but nothing changed (and we threw out some milk that didn't stay cold). I finally adjusted it by using a pair of finger nail clippers to turn the adjustment knob stub and it worked better. The sofa bed my son used to sleep on was missing several connector springs that attach the mattress to the frame and a whole section of it just sagged down. A maintenance man came to look at it but just replaced some existing springs instead of adding the ones that were missing. One of the dining chairs by the table had a totally busted seat visible from underneath, and they had to replace it. There were a few large areas of the ceiling where the paint was bubbling and chipping away.
The front desk staff were pleasant and helpful and kept getting the maintenance staff to try and take care of the items that had problems. The big issue was that the maintenance of basic room items is just not at the level it should be at in the hotel. The things we had problems with should have been easily seen and taken care of before a guest reported problems. I submitted details of my stay to Marriott in their post stay survey and encourage others to do this so they know the maintenance conditions guests need to deal with.

We got a room at the last minute as a walk in. I am a preferred gold member with Marriott so that helped. The room was pricey at $309 but it was Friday and it was in the summer. Hotel had parking and they gave me free parking since I paid so much for the room. I asked for a late 1 pm checkout and that was very easy as they did that willingly. Hot tub was nice and the location was great. I would go back and stay at this Marriott again. Nice pool for anyone but geared towards younger kids. The ocean is only steps away.

Room Tip: All the rooms are ocean front so you can not go wrong.

Hotel was clean, staff was very friendly and supportive. We were on the 9th floor. Nice sized pool, on the side of the hotel. Also had an indoor pool and hot tub. Near the north end of the board walk, so the crowd during a peak August vacation period wasn't too high.

We had omelets for breakfast two mornings - they were well prepared and tasty.

It is hard to keep everything beautiful, but our carpet leading to our room didn't always get cleaned, and the elevators were extremely busy on the weekend. This was the difference between a 4 and a 5.

Thank you for reviewing Courtyard North, Karl V. We are so happy so hear that our hotel was a good choice. Our indoor and outdoor pools are a great way to beat the heat and relax with a drink in your hand. Also, our chefs are awesome at making omelets, we are glad you enjoyed yours as well. I do want to apologize about the carpet leading to your room. Your comments will be directed to our housekeeping manager and looked into. We hope that you come visit us again next summer. Thank you again for your review.

We stayed at the south end of the beach a few years ago and decided to try the north end this year. It was so much nicer-the beach is less crowded and yet everything is still in walking distance . For the most part the room was clean, although like others stated, the carpets are stained. I would suggest that housekeeping replace dirty glasses-ours sat there for two days and also vacuum the rooms. The hallways definitely need vacuumed- my son pointed out a piece of pepperoni on the floor near the elevator (6th floor) that sat there the whole seven days. On the positive, we did get plenty of towels which was great. The hotel staff is super friendly except for one guy in the Bistro - didn't catch his name- but he acted like waiting on us was an inconvenience. Parking costs $7/day- don't know why this just isn't added on to the price of the room ahead of time. The best part was the outdoor pool which was wonderful (yes a little cold ) . I would definitely stay here again although next time I would get a suite, we had a double queen room which was roomy, but it would have been nice to have the extra space.

Thank you Kathie M for reviewing Courtyard North. We are delighted to hear that the north end was much more accommodating for your family. It is also great to hear that the outdoor pool was the best part. However, I do want to sincerely apologize for some of the housekeeping and cleanliness issues you had during your stay. It is unacceptable and your comments have been passed along to our housekeeping manager and our food and beverage department. We want to thank you for choosing our property and taking the time to share your comments. We hope to see you next summer!
