Virginia Beach Resort Hotel and Conference Center
Ranked #75 of 109 Hotels in Virginia Beach
Reviewed June 22, 2011

I am a meeting planner for a non-profit organization and we have had our annual training conference at the Va. Beach Resort & Conference Center for the past ten years. The staff is exceptionally helpful and friendly. The rooms are beautiful and overlook the Chesapeake Bay. The beach and pool are lovely and always a big hit by our conference participants. We book over 100 rooms and rarely is there even one complaint about the property or food. Wake-up calls are actually people and not a computerized voice. The sales staff are an absolute joy to work with and I would highly recommend this property for your next event or a vacation.

My husband and I travel a lot. We've stayed in many amazing places, and we've also stayed in some dumps. I had to give this stay a rating that fits closer to the latter.

In all fairness (and bc I feel bad being too negative), I will give a review on some pros and cons. But first, must address the subject of the matter:

My brother in law was getting married at a venue across the street. I checked in around 300pm and asked for 2 keys for our room. An hour later, my husband arrived. He was not able to get into contact with me at that exact time so he asked for a key to our room. He was handed a key without being asked for any identification. About an hour later, the groom arrived and was planning on putting his tux on in our room so that he would not see the bride before the ceremony. He, too, ask for a key to our room. He, also, was not asked for any ID.

Needless to say, I am thankful that there hadn't been a total stranger asking for a key to our room; because that person would have received one. ANd for the amount of money we paid for that 1 star place, it is a shame to receive anything less than excellent customer service.

Pros:
- VERY spacious rooms
- bathrooms were surprisingly clean - well, except for a couple of browish liquid stains at the base of the toilet (gross)
- water pressure was great
- the employees were very polite and nice
- balcony to partial ocean view
- free parking

Cons:
- key incident (!!!)
- brownish liquid stains at base of toilet
- grease marks on window/door to balcony
- really dated hotel and furnishings
- stairwell and elevator were FILTHY
- parking spots were VERY narrow

My family with three children ten and under stayed here for two nights in mid-May. We got a good deal through Groupon which is why we chose it. We were excited to have a suite, so we could put the kids in the bedroom and shut the door, and also fix breakfast to save some money. We were disappointed that the main door to the suite opened from the hall into the crowded bedroom, then you had to walk though it to get to the living area/kitchen which didn't have a door, just a doorway. I went out one night and woke up one kid coming in after they were in bed. The kitchenette didn't have a stovetop, just a microwave which was OK, but there was plenty of room for it - the living area was huge but there was a lot of wasted space. It turned out the pool was closed for repairs while we were there, which we found out several weeks after buying the Groupon and making the reservation. We could've rescheduled but our weekends were limited and we were coordinating the trip with a visit to my brother-in-law who lives nearby, so we decided to go anyway. The weather turned out the be lovely, so we probably wouldn't have used the pool anyway since we spent time on the beach instead, but had it rained or been cool, we'd have been disappointed. The only option the resort offered for a pool was a local rec center somewhere in the city which we would've had to pay $30 for our family to use, which would've ruined our great deal! The hotel could definitely use some updating, but for the price we paid ($87/night) it was fine. My 10 year old said it was the coolest hotel she had ever stayed in, so your kids will probably like it. If you are able to get a good deal, I'd say go for it, but don't pay full price!!

Our family enjoyed a great stay and a great rate at this hotel in the peak of the summer season. We knew it was on the Chesapeake Bay and although we did miss the ocean waves, we liked everything else about the Bay better - uncrowded, more nature, more peaceful, smaller beach so easier to walk to and watch our kids. One day, we drove to the beachfront at Virginia Beach (15 minute drive) and parked in one of the lots so we could spend the morning at the true ocean. The hotel restaurant was very good, the hotel pool is large and has both an indoor and outdoor part, plus whirlpool and sauna. There is also a fitness center, although it was a little humid and dark. One plus of the smaller beach is that you can walk one minute from your blanket on the beach to the hotel deck, where you can order fries and simple items from a beach take-out window, then eat them on the covered deck facing the Bay or take them to the beach directly,... convenient, yummy and scenic. There are also free bicycles you can borrow from the hotel with a nice bike path across the street, running into the state campground. Not all staff knew about the bicycles, but it just took one or two questions to find a staff person who knew all the details. The bikes were basic, but they had a range of sizes even for kids, and for just a fun short ride, it was nice. All rooms at the hotel are suites, which included a kitchenette, making breakfast and lunch convenient and inexpensive. For cooking food, the kitchenette only has a microwave, no stove or oven which surprised us, but was not a big deal for our purposes. The suites sleep at least six and are laid out a little differently - when entering the room, you walk into a bedroom with two double beds, then there is the bathroom/hallway, then the living room with pull out sofa /kitchenette/balcony. There is no door between the bedroom and living room area, meaning a little light and sound can travel from one room to the other, but the narrow hallway and bathroom area does provide a good buffer. There is a large grocery store across the street from the hotel, plus some restaurants both directly across the street and down the road. We liked the hotel and rate so much we stayed an extra night there, and would definitely recommend it to others.

We had a nice vacation at the beach with no fancy activities, just relaxation. Our kids still nap so, having the pool and the beach so close it was all that we needed. It didn't bothered us that the waterfront it wasn't geographically the ocean. We enjoyed a lot playing in the waves. When we checked in the staff was friendly and even agreed to change our suite with one at a higher level so we could have a better view. In terms of cleanliness, the hotel was OK. With all the guests and the sand around I don't think they could do more.

My son and daughter-in-law came in to visit with us and wanted to take in a day at the beach. Instead of a crowded tourist location, we took them to The Virginia Beach Resort and Conference Center because of its reputation for service. We were more than pleased with the professional service and the spotless room. The bayfront king suite with it's awesome view from the balcony was the perfect place to watch the sun rise and spend a relaxing morning. This hotel has a indoor pool and jacuzzi that made the stay perfect for us. Tradewinds restaurant laid out a brunch that can only be described as a feast worthy of a king. I would highly recommend this hotel to friends and family.
