My husband and I had tickets to a comedy show and wanted to try something different. I found Sonoma on the list of restaurants for the Virginia Beach Town Center. To say I am glad that I found this place would be an understatement. I cannot begin to say how incredibly pleased my husband and I were with our dining experience.
We were a tad late on our reservation and called to let them know. The host was extremely understanding and happy to hold our table for us. We felt welcome from the moment we walked through the door to the moment we left. Sonoma has a great vibe. It's decor creates a great ambiance. There is something to be said for a restaurant that is inviting in its appearance and service.
We started with a glass of wine. Having viewed the menu prior to arriving, I knew I would want white wine and my husband would want red. We asked our outstanding server, Chris F., for recommendations based on wines that we currently enjoy. We were both thrilled with his selections, as we felt they were exactly what each of us were looking for. We've been to many restaurants that seize the opportunity to pour you their most expensive glass of wine, but we were happy to receive recommendations that truly complimented our tastes.
We started with the shrimp bruschetta. I cannot say enough good things about this appetizer! It is the perfect size. Many are accustomed to large portions that are perhaps more abundant in chain restaurants, but in our experience, the portions are smaller when experiencing fine dining, and that is actually what we like. I would prefer not to eat an appetizer and consume so many calories that I am too full for dinner. Needless to say, we were pleased with the freshness of the appetizer, as well as the flavor and portion size. Both my husband and I agreed that we would order this appetizer again, though I am already planning on trying the meat and cheese board next time!
Our entrees were complete perfection. I had the almond scallops. The scallops were fresh, and cooked perfectly. I am hard to please when it comes to cooking my scallops correctly and I was very impressed. The combination of flavors was outstanding and the white chocolate mushroom cream sent this dish over the top. I can easily say that this is the best meal I have had since we moved to Virginia. My husband ordered the filet mignon and we of course let each other try the meals we had ordered. Well, it was pretty hard to decide whose was better because they were both delicious!
We saved room for the chocolate créme brulee and enjoyed that as well, though the entrees were such a hit, that they were hard to top.
The dinner was a bit pricey, but we felt that we got more than our money's worth considering our experience was excellent. It's great to have a place to go for date nights and celebrations when you don't mind spending a little extra money. We're still talking about our meal two days later. I can't say that for a lot of places in this area.
One thing is for sure...we will be visiting Sonoma anytime we want a delicious meal and outstanding service.
