Sanctuary Realty at False Cape
Reviewed August 12, 2013

Our family of five, stayed at the Sanctuary at False Cape in Sandbridge Beach VA for a week in July. We rented a three bedroom villa and we were very happy. The three pools were never crowded and the ocean side pool is really lovely. The grill area and the swim up bar at the ocean side pool was a nice bonus. The only thing we did miss was a nice local coffee shop. We drove to Starbucks in the mornings, but the 20 min. drive did become a drag. We enjoyed the quiteness of the area and made trips to the boardwalk in VA Beach as well as Norfolk. My 9 year old had a ball at the chica surf camp with Surf and Adventures which was done right at the resort beach. If you are looking for a restful and peaceful vacation this is a great choice.

Room Tip: We had a bay view room which was much less than an ocean view room. The view was just as nice and th...

We stayed June 22nd- 29th in a beautiful condo with everything we could ever want. Ocean view, close to pool, and away from noise. Sandbridge beach was beautiful, a mini Outer Banks Vacation.
We went to Virginia Beach one night, great for the kids, kayaked the bay, went fishing in the refuge, and dined at the Baja also great for kids , 15 and 4 yr old twin boys. We'd go again!
I would ask the front desk if everything is working, arcade games broken, and they should offer more.
We also waited until last minute to get a better rate.

This is our first and last stay here. All three pools were closed when we arrived. I was told it was due to a health law because someone used the bathroom in the pool...all 3 pools??? Then I was told it was a chemical imbalance but it would be fixed by 3:00pm. They finally opened the Cabana Pool but the kiddy pool would probably be closed the rest of the week because they were so busy the week of the 4th. So 2 pools are still closed! We are going on day 3 and only ONE pool open is this Hugh complex! No refunds either! We picked our condo bc it was right beside the kiddie pool area and now it will be closed the rest of the week bc 4th of July week is more important than our week! We are in Unit 118-B, the Crab Dip....nice condo but needs a few kitchen items...only one pot and very few utensils for cooking. The beach is nice here but as I said earlier we will not be back...save your money there are nicer places to stay! PS the front desk girl on Saturday, July 6th in Bldg A with dark hair was very rude too!

Sanctuary at Sandbridge beach was an excellent choice for my family - 2 parents, 2 kids and 2 grandparents. I would absolutely recommend this condo resort to friends and can't wait until we can come back! And I'm hard to impress. We looked at many hotels and other condos prior to choosing Sanctuary and we absolutely made the right decision. The grounds were well maintained and clean. There are 3 pools and there was always room to swim and play. The beach area was wonderful - not crowded like the "main" beach in Virginia beach. Check in and out was easy. The 10-15 minute drive to the grocery store, Target, and many restaurants was easy. Each condo will be decorated different inside due to different owners, but we had a wonderful 3BR unit overlooking the ocean. We rented the 3rd week in June. The negative comments from others - make me think that they haven't rented condos or VRBOs before. This is not a hotel, with bellman or carts for luggage. Sanctuary is a very nice place for everyone to relax and play.

First off, be very careful with your directions! There are a few roads with other names on the map, but are labeled Princess Anne when you get there...don't know who she was, but she was pretty bad with directions! Anyway, once we got there it was a welcome respite. Very nice place. I have no idea what the previous review was talking about regarding the music at the pool..the condo was fabulous..A-305 Coastal Edge..the grocery store is less than 10 minutes away, and Va Beach was about a 20-30 minute drive..not far. Lots to do in the area, and plenty of places for dinner. We had breakfast, snacks, and lunch at the condo usually and dinner out. The view was inspiring. We had a little difficulty figuring out the tv with all the remotes, but figured it out. The internet wasn't connecting and the front door wasn't closing right, but someone came right up immediately. The only thing I would suggest to them for the future would be to give the front balconies a good scrubbing and maybe some new paint. Waving the card before pushing elevator buttons gets a little tiring, especially when you're carrying stuff from the beach, but I'd rather they do it than not. I'm sure it keeps the rif raf out. We had a terrific vacation and would love to come back! The beach was beautiful and quiet. The kids loved the pools. We came out the first week of June 2013.

Couple, 50's, stayed off-season (April 2013), 3BR unit facing the bay.

Location. We came for the birding and we glad to be next to Back Bay for early am and late pm hikes. It's centrally located to get to First Landing, MacKay Island and Great Dismal. The Food Lion is 8 miles out, but we were out every day anyway. April is very quiet, almost empty, few other cars in the garage. Got a great deal on the unit.

We did see people using the hot tub, and the grills, and they appeared to be working fine. No music playing or pools open. All elevators worked fine. Our unit was clean and well furnished with bureaus, hangers in closets, all kitchen ware. Stove, DW, Ice maker, MW, heat all worked. VERY strong water pressure both bathrooms, as well as faster internet than we have at home. Might feel like less when there are many people using it?

The balcony was clean (3BR units have one 2x as big as 2BR units). It also had new porch cushions, LR sofa, dining table and new leather bar stools at the counter. I believe the carpet had been exchanged for a new tile floor and area rugs as well. (Pictures changed online after I rented it). No bugs in kitchen or anywhere. You could leave the balcony door open. W/D worked too. I'd say the owners of our unit were very conscientious.

Sheets were on all the beds and as it was a unit that slept 8, they left 8 towel packs! Each shrink-wrapped pack has a bath towel, hand towel and washcloth. Some are thinner and scratchier than others. Extra blankets and pillows were in closets. They also left 3 dish towels, and our unit had 2 Teflon pot holders. There is no soap or any paper products supplied. Previous tenants had left some, and we left some for the next guests.

The only broken item was the MW light (over stove) was burned out. The only drawback to staying on the bay side was the restaurant across the street stayed open late Sat and Sun nights. Cars leaving, etc. But then it was closed Mon and Tue, and mostly empty Wed. and Thu. This was our first time and we would come back again. I definitely recommend this as a quiet relaxing off-season getaway. (restaurants and parks reviewed separately).

We have stayed at Sanctuary three times in two different units. We have always been very pleased and we've booked a longer stay each time. Important qualifiers:

1. We've always stayed in the spring; late April - early May. Cannot comment on the peak season when it is presumably much more fully-occupied, busy and noisy
2. We've always taken advantage of special last-minute rates offered by condo owners; if I were reviewing the value for money based on full price, then perhaps my impressions would be different.
3. We've always stayed in B-units (newer building); so couldn't comment on the condition of the older A-building, but the entire complex isn't more than ten(?) years old?

Regarding the comment about the excessive fees, yes, all the extra fees were a bit surprising the first time, but once you know, you can factor them in. To first-time renters: the fees are quoted in advance, not secretly added on. Inquire with the management company. Remember this is not a hotel with hotel services catering to your every wish. It's a condo complex with units owned by individuals and a management company who facilitates their rental. Yes, the management company should respond to issues, ensure things are well maintained, safe and secure. We've never had any such issues during our visits.

The location is right on the beach near the Little Island Park and pier, at the far southern end of the Sandbridge Beach community. It's a ten-mile drive to shops and supermarkets in the Princess Anne/Red Mill area. There is a small store in Sandbridge, but it's a beach-style convenience store.

In our opinion, the real advantage is that Sanctuary is at the far end of the community, next to a city-owned park, then a federally-owned wildlife refuge, then a state-owned park, then the NC state line. No further development as you go south. You can bike through the fed and state parks then out on the beach at low tide all the way to NC if you wish. Or walk ...and walk and walk the roads through the refuge and park and enjoy the wildlife. It's a very nice balance of enjoying beach, protected parkland, and yet all the conveniences of a large condo for accommodation.

The units we have stayed in (some no longer available for rent, so won't mention them by unit number here) were very clean, well-appointed, everything you need. The sheets aren't 300-count, nor should they be; again, it isn't a hotel. You need to buy toiletries and kitchen cleaners or bring them with you. Parking is gated, but not 'secure', though we've never had any problems, the garage is well-lit and the community seems very safe. Fitness room is large and well-equipped, though the rubber floor still off-gases in the heat or when the room has been closed up for a while. Kinda like working out in a tire store.

We have stayed there annually, and we'll keep going back. It's great place.

Room Tip: If you are pool/courtside, choose a higher floor, though you probably can't escape the daytime r...
