We stop here for lunch when we are travelling through Tappahannock and have always found it a great place to eat. Please be aware if you are ordering a bowl of cream of crab soup, you will definitely get a HUGE BOWL of soup. The lunch buffet always looks delicious with many, many items, but we don't care for buffets, so we always order from the menu. Their lunch specials have generous proportions and we've never gotten anything that was not delicious. We even ordered the baked spaghetti lunch special (a little hesitant since this was a seafood restaurant); but we were glad we ordered it. It came with a large salad and very generous plate of baked spaghetti which was SMOTHERED with melted mozzarella cheese. We asked for their homemade hot rolls instead of the garlic bread and these are always delicious as well. We have gotten the mini crab cakes with fried shrimp and found both of these scrumptious. I don't know what some of the other reviewers ordered, but we definitely don't agree with the negative comments. The food is always delicious with generous proportions and the service is friendly. The service may be a little on the slow side, but not that bad. Try Lowery's in Tappahannock--I think you'll be glad you did.

They offer a reasonable price buffet. I have been there on various occasions when it went from average to very good. It all depends on what they are putting on the menu. Service is good and atmosphere is appropriate for the area.

Just skip it. We went about 3 years back and this is the most dated, poor service, awful food, expensive dive you can visit. We complained after the trip and paid full price because we didn't want to make a scene with my 93 year old uncle. They offered and finally insisted on a gift certificate even though we told them we would not be driving a couple of hours to eat there again. We gave the certificate to a relative in the area but they didn't seem really thrilled either. I thought by now, improvements had been made but the owner doesn't seem to even respond. How did this place get an excellence award - are the people that untraveled to know what good seafood tastes like?? It certainly isn't rotten, bad, greasy or cold frozen fish. This place could be excellent but it is not. I don't know if the owner has just gotten too old or ill to manage it or what..if so someone in the family should step in and sell it. I honestly can't understand the health department not closing it. Just go over to williamsburg. I don't know of anywhere else in the area.

Lowery's has been around for 75 years, specializing in "comfort food" for both locals and those travelling through the Virginia Tidewater countryside. This is an old-fashioned family restaurant with an extensive menu. The Sunday Brunch is virtually a community event for the "after church" goers and the Sunday drivers. This is not one of the "cookie cutter" chain restaurants so you can always expect the daily specials and other menu staples to be served just the way you ordered by friendly staff members.

We were holding a riverfront home open for an auction preview and stopped in for lunch. Amy had the crab chowder and a BLT while I enjoyed a mini crabcakes and scallops special. The BLT came with handmade chips and they were great. The hot, homemade rolls are amazing...we had to take the 2 leftover home with us. It was a wonderfully traditional VA rivah meal and we very much appreciated the fare and our time together.
