We were holding a riverfront home open for an auction preview and stopped in for lunch. Amy had the crab chowder and a BLT while I enjoyed a mini crabcakes and scallops special. The BLT came with handmade chips and they were great. The hot, homemade rolls are amazing...we had to take the 2 leftover home with us. It was a wonderfully traditional VA rivah meal and we very much appreciated the fare and our time together.

Lowery's has been around since the 1930s and is popular with many folks. Food is good, but not creative or gourmet by any stretch of the imagination. The servers are very polite and attentive and it was a pleasant experience. We were there with our daughter, son-in-law and grandson -- just 10 months old. They do a nice job with kids -- even the very little ones like ours, and they are very patient with that.

Lowery's is a family-owned restaurant that has many fans in its hometown of Tappahannock, VA, where it has long been a favorite among residents.

Service is always friendly, from the servers, who check in regularly with your table to be sure that everything's okay, to the cashier who is always cheerful.

Food varies considerably: fried oyster that were mediocre on one visit were superb on the most recent visit: very fresh, "just out of the water" taste, lightly battered: a delicious treat - although not so good on a previous visit. The lump crab is fresh, generous in size, and sweet. Order it by itself, cooked in butter, and you won't be disappointed, but when stuffed in broiled shrimp, be prepared for tasty crab atop shrimp that is dry and leathery.

Fresh rolls, served upon arrival are superb: light, yeasty, and delicious - but baked potatoes arrive at the table not fully cooked: french fries are pale and limp, green beans okay, although overcooked and not always fresh.

If you like fried food, whether chicken or fish, , you will probably be happy here, If you prefer fresh seafood that is broiled or sauteed lightly, so that it retains its fresh taste, you will probably be disappointed. Still, all in all, this is a reliable place for a good, if not great meal.

My husband I flew down into the Tappahannock-Essex County Airport and got a vehicle and drove over for dinner on Friday night (last night). Parking lot looked packed but we got promptly seated. They had a nice seafood buffet (crab, shrimp, scallops etc) for $34.95 and a salad bar. We didn't want that much food so we each got a flounder sandwich that came with a lots of shoestring fries (plenty) a small side of cole slaw. The flounder was very flaky and perfectly cooked. Also came with sides of rolls and a serving of spoon bread. Everything was great. My husband said their sweet tea was wonderful too. Attentive service (even the hostesses and managers were walking through checking and getting drinks if the waitress was slightly delayed getting to the table -- outstanding team work!) although the decor is still in the 70s and a bit dark inside. Great meal. Will be back.
